Italians are world renowned for their love of the crossbow, and none more so then the Genoese. Milanese commanders value these crossbowmen highly, thus they equip them with brigandine armour and the large Pavise-style shield. For use in melee, Genoese Crossbowmen are also equipped with a long sword.
I think they look neat. I didn't see anyone else add this topic, so there is the info you can go browse the unit at Totalwar.com and hassle for improper historical relevance here lol.

Okay but ghastly shield covering - surely a red cross of Genoa would have sufficed.
And why the hell aren't the Genose in this game ahead of Milan, its really puzzled me. They have just as much right as Venice. Milan didn't really become a power until the 15th century and certainly weren't when the game begins.

I wonder if they are mercenaries?
I think they look great
Very Dungeon Siege-ish
I wonder if they are mercenaries?
I do hope that they wont do the whole "all mercenaries are green" thing again. I like to see some difference in my armies, rather than every faction being colour-coded. BTW, other than that I think the unit looks cool.

Shoot, I want to see what they look like but I'm at work right now and the computer I'm on is garbage so I can't look at them. I guess I'll have to wait until i get home :wall:

I like them except for the bright green neck guard.
I don't really mind the green everywhere else, just the neck.
And I hope that the sheild can be deployed on the ground when firing.

I agree with Mango, but I assume that the shield will be used because they said they were Pavise crossbowmen.

Talk about brigandine armour and the plate leg defences would suggest a relatively late date - late 1300s or so - but then again the that was the time Italian communal infantry reached its peak too.
Other than that, AFAIK the pavises were normally carried by separate troops - armoured spearmen somewhat unimaginatively called pavesari - who formed the first ranks to shield the crossbowmen from enemy missiles and shock troops in what seems to have some remarkable similarities to the ancient Persian sparabara system, but one has to make concessions to the limitations of the game engine I guess.

Well you can get a look at the unit card for Mercenary German Knights in the demo, and they look sort of reddish brown to me.

I'm guessing that it's because Milan is a relatively well known city, whereas Genoa isn't. It bothers me also.
Any self respecting MTW2 mod will replace Milan with Genoa.
