Hey,

I used to have a good AntiViruis (AV), Mcafee. Well I had ploblems with it, and ends up, I can't update it or Turn on my AOL AV. So I am stuck with only a Firewall and Spyware protection, keeping my Computer above water for now..

As of lately, it been running twice as slow (it always did,but stop after 5 minutes,no big deal) and some odd ploblems. I am broke right about now, and won't get a good one till I get pay, though I saw one for 15 bucks, dunno where.

I don't want my comp to blow up before MTW2 comes out, so I like to know, if Anyone knows a good Free AV (no pirated ones) I can used untill I get money? Also, anyone knows of a good one I can buy in the mean time??

Thanks,

Were it me (and it's not), I'd uninstall all that crap and just go with AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) Antivirus. I don't put much stock in software firewalls(use a cheap hardware one instead) and it's not worth it to me to have any "active" spyware blockers taking up system resources. To keep away spyware, I just use occasional scans (Ad-Aware/Spybot S&D)- but most importantly, I use Firefox with Adblock and NoScipt running.

NoScript can be tedious sometimes, but the headaches it saves you are worth it in the long run IMO.

AVG Free. Check
Adaware Free. Check
Spybot S&D. Check... used as a last resort for particular intrusions.

I personally use ClamWin myself

I tried clamwin but it had a serious memory leak and thus would not finish scanning my laptop. Which kind of defeats the purpose.

If you use the internet responsibly (ie, with Firefox and NoScript) and don't download and install random crap, you'll be ok with occasional spyware scans, I think.

I may give AVG a shot.

Clamwin sounds like a shot for a particular VD.

And AVG Free just got a major upgrade that makes it run faster and better...

I get McAfee for free :2thumbsup:

Though I heard one of their recent updates actually contained a virus :huh2: It hasn't affected me.

I installed the AVG anti-spyware program and it found lots of stuff that other programs did not find.

I run it once a day now.

Interestingly, this is exactly the configuration I've arrived at after trying many others. AVG, SpywareBlaster, Firefox. Maybe I'd behave differently if I wasn't sitting behind a router-cum-firewall ...

I also forgot to mention that I use Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html). It's totally free and blacklists sites/programs and prevents them from installing malware on your system. A useful tool.

I use Avast!, is similarly free to AVG.
My (well out of date) experience of AVG was that it missed two that Norton did pick up, while much more recently, Avast! picked up a trojan that had been sitting in a 6 year old file!

As mentioned by others, one of the best things you can do is use Firefox with noscript + adblock plugins.
I have java disabled + cookies disabled with manually set exceptions for sites that I want to let give cookies ie forums & webmail etc.

Also have, keep up to date with fairly frequent scans: Adaware, Spybot S&D + Spyware Blaster.

For certain types of infection, smitrem (http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/) is about the only solution short of full format.

Everything you need:

Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/)
SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
AVG and AVG Anti Spyware (http://free.grisoft.com/)
Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/download_and_buy/product_comparison_chart.php)

AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido Anti Spyware) is very good. It will detect malware that Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware will often miss. You should always download those programs from the links above, downloading them elsewhere could be risky as they may be fakes.

I doubt people are trying to hack you. The "firewall" is simply alerting you to normal internet traffic which could be an attempted hacking attempt... This is what is commonly referred to as "Scareware". The aim is to make you think: "Wow all those hackers are outside trying to get in and the firewall is stopping them". If you really must use a software firewall try the Zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=GB&lang=en) free version.

Zone Alarm Pro is not free but probably one of the best integrated AV, antyspyware and firewall program.

Eset NOD32 is the best AV, and is cheap.

Re-installing does not extend evaluation periods of programs. Coders are wiser than you. ~:)

Use your eyes next time. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=59901)

Edit: I see there is no other alternative there but Zone Alarm as a firewall. Apologies, I'm a dumb*** :shame: Take this (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/download.php) as a token of apologies. It is valid for 30 days.

BHC, grab that (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/)! That's a totally free one. I did not try it myself but seems professional according to the look and the expressions of the producer's website.

I'm sure that Pro is the trial version, once the trial is up it should go back to being the free version again. See what happens when the trial is up before uninstalling it and installing anything else.
