I've had customer machines that were infested with over 40,000 malware before the scans ended - fortunately everything was purged in the end without much difficulty.
It doesn't take long for the bad stuff to build up, of course, when you run unpatched Windows without AV, anti-spyware, or a firewall on a broadband connection to the Internet.

Well, as a last resort, there's always start>my computer>right-click C:>format.
Sounds drastic, but if you do backups regularly...
Mrs. Kukri surfs to over 1,200 urls per day (she mass-enters sweepstakes and contests). Inevitably, she picks up bad stuff from some of those sites, despite AV, firewall, spyware detectors, etc.
She reformats C: about every 90 days to be rid of the pesky ones. But she does backups weekly, so the most she ever loses is 6 days progress.

I back my stuff up 2-4 times a month, only 1 back up contais Major ones and such, other 1-3 are just to keep up,so nothing major here,yet..
One, ever, and it was my own fault.
Downloaded a trojan, and ran it, pesky thing pretending to be useful and all.

The only problematic virus I've ever gotten came on a PcGamer cover cd.
I swear, the internet is relatively safe if you just stay away from warez (and related/similar) sites, avoid P2P file sharing, don't open email attachments that you don't need (this includes the stupid stuff friends send around) and generally use common sense.
In ancient times there was one on a magazine CD, it would simply make Windows 3.11 or Windows 95 not recognize the CD drive anymore, but my dad and I managed to delete it with McAffee.
Then there was this one I described in another thread, I was curious about whether I could download Windows Updates before installing my firewall and ended up getting that restart message the blaster virus creates while I was still downloading... Since my HDD was more or less empty anyway, I just reformatted and installed my firewall before connecting to the net since then, no big issue.
I opened a Klez virus, one day.
It unables to run a scan for viruses of the disk.

One more poll-ish thread from BHCWarman and I'll explode like a organ gun closed from the mouth. :smoking:

Dont get many on here. I use AVG (AV), Zone Alarm (Firewall), Spybot (Anti-Spyware) and use the NoScript Firefox plugin (blocks Javascript but you can allow certain sites)
