Dear followers of the glorious history of Armenia and its uniquely alcoholic ruling family,
I have decided to move my Armenian AAR, "Hayastan: From Kingdom to Empire", out of the "Rise & Expansion of your Empire" thread into its own thread so as not to clutter the old one up. So here I'll post the original chapters, plus more as the campaign progresses.

CHAPTER 1: Artaxias's Dream

Part 1: Introduction......Part 2: The Family......Part 3: First Expedition

Wonderful writing, I felt really involved involved! However, I would advise that you don't use italics for the majority of your text. It makes it a lot harder to read, for me, at least.

Well thank you all for your comments and I'm glad you like the AAR. I've been very busy lately so haven't had much of a chance to play or write things up, but there is more in the pipeline. Anyway here for your amusement is Chapter 3.

Oh and sorry about the italics, I thought it made things look more "chronicle-y" but I guess it does make it kinda hard to read. Anyway these had already been done so I couldn't really be bothered to redo it (the JPGs are exported from a DTP program so you have to edit the DTP file and then re-export it to correct stuff :sweatdrop: )

Whoops, something's not right there! I just checked my handwritten notes and it was (unsurprisingly), Lilybaeum and not Rome that fell to the Scipii in 254. I blame the Armenian State Propaganda Ministry for this. Sorry! :sweatdrop:

I'm not too sure what you mean by "tabs", but the process of making the AAR was basically to take handwritten notes and many, many screenshots while playing the campaign, then use a batch converter to make the screenshots from TGAs into JPEGs, assemble the whole thing in a DTP program and then export each page as a JPEG. These can then be uploaded to ImageShack which gives you the code to make the thumbails.

Back soon with more tales of famous exploits and drinking binges.

Yeah I've been thinking about doing that, the only problem is the massive file size. The JPGs are over a meg each and they're not idea cos they make the text messy. Exporting it direct to PDF gets a nice result but it's like 50MB for a 20-page segment without downsampling the images. I'll have to give it some thought.

Anyway time for a little weekend Armenia action with...

Also, I've just been looking through my notes from the campaign (up until the point where I accidentally deleted my savegame, so that I have to replay the last quarter of it), I find that I still have the coollest RTW battle I have EVER played, which is coming up in a few [game] decades' time :2thumbsup:

Once again thank you for your kind massaging of my ego! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the AAR, it's actually really good fun to write too and I find that taking notes for an AAR really adds to the immersion of a campaign since you spend more time memorising the characters and their histories.

Earlier today I tried running EB 0.8 for the first time, and my 3-year old laptop graphics card laughed in my face. This is good news however as it's more time to spend on chronicling the glories of Armenia! So, without further ado, here's...

Yeah Arame's death was upsetting, especially when he'd made sure to occupy the city peacefully. It was one of those moments that makes you wish there was an "exterminate populace" button after you had occupied th city :smash:
Good point about the map, I'll make sure there's one on the next page. At the moment Armenia controls its initial two provinces, plus Atropatene, Bosphorus and all of Asia Minor except Lycia.

Greetings once again Armenia-watchers, and apologies for the long delay in updating the AAR.
I've been looking into the possibility of releasing this as a massive PDF book when it's finished but as I mentioned the file size is ludicrous. Just the stuff I have already posted (including today's installment) comes to about 80MB as a PDF because of all the imags. I'm thinking of coming up with an internet version where the images are downsampled to a lower DPI, which would allow for practical downloading but would not look anywhere near as good.

Secondly, big thanks to Avlvs Libvrnivs Britannicvs Maximvs for nominating this AAR for the Hall of Fame '06 - cheers man! :2thumbsup:

Thanks for the compliment. To answer your question, there is no particular tool required to take the screenshots. When you press Print Screen during the game, the game dumps a screenshot in the TGAs directory of your Rome - Total War folder, numbered in the order they were taken. When the folder gets a bit full I just convert them all to JPGs and move them out ready for incorporation into the AAR. You can use any program with batch conversion abilities for this - I use Paint Shop Pro but Irfanview or any of a dozen other programs would be just as good.

And to all you guys thanks for your encouraging comments and I'll try to be back soon with another episode

Barbarossa, i believe that I speak for our entire Org community when i say “Absolutely **** brilliant”!
The huge amount of time and effort you no doubt had to put in to this “Aar” is a 100% +1 worth it.

It’s proven to be an ideal relaxation from my studies.
And for me this is a big deal.

The fact that you’re intoxicating me to write my own Rtw epic story line is the only thing i don’t like about it.
(This is from a guy who for the moment doesn’t even have the time to “amuse” his girlfriend)

I shouldn’t say this, but I’m almost willing to pay you for continuing you’re work.

Keep up the good work mate and If you’re ever in Belgium; I owe you a beer… heck make it two.

Hi Upxl, thank you for the very generous encouragement! I love reading other people's AARs too, so if you do feel inspired to start your own I'll definately read it. (you can blame me when you explain it to your girlfriend :laugh4: )
Good luck with your studies and if I'm ever in Belgium (again) I will take you up on that beer! :medievalcheers:

Barbarossa the unwieldy size of your pics may be due to the image editing suite you use.

As I saved the last pic of chapter 2 (i read damned slow) and it was 1.21MB as is (according to my comp) I loaded it up in the gimp and saved it and it is now 351kb with very little quality degredation as far as I can see.

Here is the link to the 351kb image

https://img103.imageshack.us/img103/9793/1315hi1.jpg

My vb code is off so I cant use a thumbnail link as you do.

It could probably get smaller and still be ledgable.

As for the AAR the little bit ive read has been very good. I like the way you make it seem like the computers random crazyness is some sort of strategy.

Thanks for the tip HumphreysCraig00. I hadn't noticed that I'd left the filter settings on max detail when exporting to JPG. This chapter's images have been compressed a little. It is possible to see some image degradation but nothing severe. If anyone really doesn't like the result I'll go back to doing it the old way.

ImageShack will handle all that for you. Personally I use the imageShack toolbar which will allow you to upload multiple images at one time and get the thumbnail code for each of them. You can cut and paste that code right into the forum.

I apologise for any misspellings, inconsistencies, inappropriateness etc. in the current installment. this is due to:

Thank you, and to all others who have been so generous with their comments. I would certainly have made this into an EB AAR, but unfortunately when I try to start 0.8, my three and a half-year old, 64 MB, stripped down laptop graphics card laughs in my face. Guess I'll have to wait for my new PC before I can sample the glory that is EB.

Like so many others who have already attested on here - great, great job!

Your text & writing style along with the game-based illustrations AND the tongue-in-cheek humor, keep all of us thoroughly entertained and wanting more. (For several days now your entries have served as entertainment during my lunch break while at work). Artashes of Tomisa getting 'swindled' for more than a half-million denarii had me laughing out loud!! :laugh4:

Hearty Armenian greetings once again, fellow Org dudes, and sorry for the long hiatus (seems like I say that every post!). Real-world work got on top of me a little but I think I'm over the worst of that now so hopefully updates will be a little more regular

Thank you all for raising my morale with your kind comments. If you put your mouse pointer over me right now, you'd get a tooltip saying "Steady (spirits lifted by the orgahs' encouragements)".

Just to respond to some of your feedback:

Poulp' and dacdac, well spotted with the 100 pages mark! I hadn't noticed but it's nice to reach that milestone and hopefully I won't have to write another 100 pages before it's done!

Fate: yep, you rumbled me. I didn't read the bribe price properly, so I thought I was forking out 50,000 instead of 500,000. Couldn't believe it when I saw the end of turn report. :wall: Then I had to pin the blame on poor old Artashes of Tomisa for the purposes of the AAR!

Upxl: that is a tragic story. I hope they treated their defeated Armenian subjects well ~:mecry:

and César Victor: the program is an old, cheapo Desktop Publishing app called Serif PagePlus (version 6 is what I use, I think they're up to about 10 now).

OK, let's get on with...

Fate: yep, you rumbled me. I didn't read the bribe price properly, so I thought I was forking out 50,000 instead of 500,000. Couldn't believe it when I saw the end of turn report.
It made a good story to tell so don’t worry about it.

Cant wait what you’re cooking up for us next Barb.
No doubt live will get pretty hard for those bleeding Romans any day now hu?!
Also it seems that you're starting an AAR hype around here, giving inspiration to other talented (soon to be) AAR writers and that little push in the back for others who needed it.
Well done! (this is getting old aint it).

Yet another episode of Armenian awesomeness for all you readers out there. We have now seen over 75 years of Armenian history, and there are only 17 more years to go. Although they are pretty packed with battles.
I may have to tone down the detail on some of the battles to stop you guys getting bored, as some of them seem a bit repetitive due to my cheesy tactics and the AI stupidity.
Writing this is fun but kinda tiring also. I would like to do another at some time in the future - probably for BI - but I think various family members will murder me if I plan that right now!
I would love to think that I have inspired others to write AARs, I love to read other people's.

maybe it looks like I was hiding somewhere waiting for the next part of this AAR
and maybe it was true

I'll edit that post as soon as I'm done reading

Reading done !
Lots of battle in this installment, and although the narration is vivid, I fear it'll slow the story down.

As a sidenote, I particulary enjoyed the picture of Asinus Agrippa heroically leaving the battelfield.

Yeah, I agree. Also I think some of the battles may be a bit repetive since the Brutii have so many men.
As I don't want to compromise the completeness of the AAR by missing stuff out, what I'm going to do now is give each of the battles a "star rating" to help readers decide whether to take the time to read them or not. These ratings will be:

* - Missable. Read only if you must know everything.
** - Worth a read if you have the time.
*** - Good battle, recommended reading.

Hope this helps stop the last installments getting boring!

Well written again.

The only criticism I'd put forward is I've noticed that many battles just seem to be heavily one sided in your favour and the kind of heroic/clear victories that are so commonplace in RTW that they're not that noteworthy after a while, not unless the enemy king is killed or something. You've basically reached steamroller mode where the enemy resistance is only a mere inconvenience to you taking over the rest of the world. Aside from deliberately taking risks or what have you, I suppose at this stage of the tale there's not a lot you can do about it.

I had a few ideas what I'd do if I were writing such a thing, but then I doubt I'd get as far as you have. Thirty regions is typically more than enough for me.

You're right, quite a few of the battles do turn out one-sided, although both of the ones in the current chapter had the Armenians as underdogs to begin with. As you say, with this number of provinces you are not going to be in the situation where you are running out of men or money in the long term, although I did manage to lose those two provinces in Europe to the Brutii.
I want the AAR to be complete record of an entire campaign, so I'm going to continue to document even the one-sided battles, but I will use the star system to flag up those that are a foregone conclusion.

Do let me know any advice/feedback you have on making the final chapters interesting though.

Once again ... ... nicely done Barbarossa. In addtion to being entertained, I continue to follow your AAR very closely as I'm learning from your applied tactics in the field.

I've just started a Parthian campaign - which, as you know, is very reliant upon cavalry and horse archers. In the early going, money is hard to come by and the infantry aren't worth a crap. Having played several Roman faction campaigns, I find that I'm having to re-train myself in battlefield tactics. Consequently, what you do with specialized cavalry is of great interest to me. However, I don't think that the Parthians ever have ready access to phalanx units (much to my dismay). ~:mecry:

I'm glad I chose the Germans over the Parthians. I'm having a lotta fun and if I was Parthia I'd prolly still only have the two provinces :sweatdrop:

Parthia is fun to play, and forces you to adopt a very different fighting style to normal. I have played a full Parthian campaign right to the end, and I found Persian Cavalry to be a superb unit given their cost and 1-turn build time. My tactics as Parthia were to produce full-stack armies with the following composition:
1 x general
10 x Persian Cavalry
2 x Archers
4 x Eastern Infantry
2 x Cataphracts
1 x Onagers
I found this to be quite capable of taking on any enemy, including Scipii full stacks with silver upgraded Praetorians and Urbans. The PCs get split into two brigades, one on each flank, and line up as "firing squads" to pour arrows into the enemy from the flanks. Either the enemy splits is force to deal with them and loses cohesion, or it ignores them and presses on towards your infantry line, allowing the PCs to shoot them up as they trudge on. The PCs can deal with light and medium cavalry in melee if the enemy sends them out. As the enemy approach your infantry, they come under onager fire, and then archer fire, and are then held by the Eastern Infantry (on guard mode) and pummelled on the flanks by the Cataphracts and your General. By the time they leg it, your PCs have been resting for a while and are in perfect position to intercept and ride down the routers. Great fun!

Now for some more Armenian history. Let me be honest, this chapter isn't very interesting. The battles aren't that great. If you want to skip it and save your attention for the cooler battles coming up towards the end of the campaign, here's a brief summary of what happened:

Armenian forces secured the Danube bridge, then crossed into Paionia and defeated a very powerful Roman army, albeit at heavy loss to themselves. The mercenary defence force in Scythia beat off another Roman attack. The Army of Vahagan arrived back from the East and went in for retraining, while the Army of King Rusa arrived in Propontis ready to take part in the European campaign. The Second Army was removed from Cyrene by sea and landed in Greece, besieging Sparta to open a second front against the Brutii. Two Armenian armies are encamped in North Africa, facing Scipii forces streaming down the coast.

The bridge over the Danube was recaptured from the Romans, and a major victory won in Propontis. The Second Army landed in Sparta and seized the city after an earlier defeat. Menua of Satala was killed in battle, but his Northern Defence Force continued to defend Campus Scythii successfully. Scipii forces invaded Libya but were defeated by the Third Army in a large battle against the odds. Some comically debauched characters came of age.

Another good episode. I actually enjoy reading the defeats more than the victories, however. Whether it's the unpredictability of the outcome, or the defiance to the end, it makes for a good read.

One thing I've noticed now I've started to take take more interest in the story (I admit I probably didn't read most of the first dozen or so chapters), that you have a great ability to recall previous events; the relations of one character to another long since dead; former family member's achievements etc etc. Do you constantly keep a record of everything or are you just remembering the best you can? I just recall once thinking of writing a story about a Numidian campaign way back a year and a half or so. I was running through the campaign in my head on the way back home one day, and thought I'd remembered everything right and had a great story. I never wrote it when I returned, but later I was browsing through my old saved games and realised I'd completely got confused with a couple of crucial family members which would have stuffed up the story entirely!

I'm really itching to start my own Dacian campaign story now, but there's still so much work to be done on my mod before it is fully playable. And I don't help myself by starting test campaigns along the way and getting really into them! Oh and Galactic Civilisations 2 has been taking up the rest of my time.

And I don't help myself by starting test campaigns along the way and getting really into them! Oh and Galactic Civilisations 2 has been taking up the rest of my time.

I did keep a very full handwritten record while playing the campaign, running to dozens of pages. Also while typing it up I put the family members onto a family tree on a genealogy program with details of their employment, dates of life etc. which helps me to remember who held what job and who their relatives were without having to load up a savegame to check. I might release this as a downloadable PDF at the end of the campaign if anyone wants it.

Your Dacian campaign story and César Victor's Germania AAR are two Org events I'm really looking forward to. Will be great to be able to relax and read someone else's work! :medievalcheers:

Now for the latest installment of Hayastan - From Kingdom to Empire. Quite a lot of battle in this chapter so we only get through a single year. Here's a quick summary for those who don't want to read it all:

With victories in Tribus Getae and Epirus, Armenia brought all of Greece except Thermon under control. Armenian fleets control the Adriatic and have dominated Roman shipping throughout the Med. The Scipii launched a twofold attack in North Africa under elderly commander Flavius Manilius, but were spanked by the Royal Army of Armenia.

Thanks to everyone for their continued support and encouragement as we head towards the end of this lengthy chronicle. Particularly thanks to fate and dacdac for supporting me since the first days.

As some people have said that this AAR has inspired them to start their own, I'd like to take the opportunity to tip my hat to two great AAR writers whose work inspired me in turn.
Maltz's RTW Stories series is a great read and pioneered the use of multiple screenshots with annotations here at the org. I particularly enjoyed his Numidian Story (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=39707), but he also did others on the Julii and even on Armenia itself!
Another famous and highly accomplished AAR is Artaserse's EB AAR, The Wasteland (http://forums.rometotalrealism.org/showthread.php?t=469). Great fun, very very involved and graphically intensive, and gave me the idea of using some humorous speech bubbles in mine.

Right, now on with the business, hopefully next chapter will be the last!!

Summary for those who don't want to read the whole thing:
Brutii resistance in Greece crumbled as Thermon fell, bringing all Greece under Armenian control. As the Third Army kept the peace in North Africa with a series of victories over the Scpii, Emperor Liapos ordered the invasion of Italy. By the time the Emperor himself landed there, Armenian forces had secured Apulia and Bruttium, and Campania fell soon after. The road to Rome is open.

Well all good things must come to an end. I enjoyed that. A bit sad to see the AI's lack of strategic awareness left them unable to fully defend their homelands, but that's RTW's AI for you.

You should have plenty of spare time on your hands now that's over. What's next then. A shave?

The DVD bonus is a great idea.
Ending the AAR with the fall of Rome too.

Trully, "Barbarossa82's Armenian AAR" is the perfect example of what a AAR should be.
I'm glad I could follow the story and wait eagerly for every new installment.

You deserve a crown of wreath for this AAR.
or maybe not,
because you set the standards very high for the people who want to follow your example.

Outstanding Indeed! 24 chapters PLUS extra bonus material! As Poulp' stated, a new bench-mark has been set for future AAR's.

Hail Armenia! Now we know the 'real' history of antiquity.

You can go back to your real life now - although I don't know what I'll do for entertainment during my lunch break at work. Thanks Man - this has been a tremendously fun and enjoyable read.

And, if after a month or two, you get motivated to write another AAR, please do! Tell us more about Numidia or the true and unknown history of Briton.

All the best! ~

First of all i would like to thank barbarossa82 for this incredible AAR (the best i've ever read:book: ). But there seems to some kind of a problem with some of the chapters. For instance the first, third, fourth, and the seventh, part of the 12'th chapter, are missing from ImageShack, and is very frustratig not to be able to read about the battle of cherssonesos
