once you get these weapons from the Dutch, can you cancel off relations with them and make your own arquebueses/muskets?

I don't think there's a way to cancel the 'relations' off in an 'official' way. You certainly need their trading post to be able to train musks/arq's. :embarassed:

awe, that's contradictory to history, a smith traded his daughter in marrige to a Dutch guy, and got the secret of gun making, then they showed up everywhere, and they supposedly were better made than the European ones.Nobunaga had 3,000 at Nagashino I believe :P

You can build a gun factory which gives you higher quality muskets...can't remember if it allows you to build your own though.

hmm, I'll test it, that sounds more like history

it is possible to destroy the trading post and reject the dutch / portuguese by declining there offer next time they wisit .. whit gun factory it is possible to train ashigaru whit teppo ... but destroy the port and you loose 200 koku income :( ... so better keep it, as the gun factory is too hard to get : need citadel legendary armory .. to much for only +1 honor ...

true, but is there any certain way to make sure Christianity never takes root in your lands?

Trading with the Dutch doesn't spread Christianity into your territory; only trading with the Portuguese does that. The Dutch don't care about spreading their religion--they just want your money. ~D

Christianity only takes root if you build churches. You can trade with the Portugese without going Christian.

You gotta be kidding me! In all the years I've had Shogun, I've always been of the impression that accepting the Portugese offer of trade automatically meant my lands would start converting to Catholicism. Are you now telling me that all this time I've held off on getting muskets until the Dutch arrive (thus putting me at a disadvantage), it was for nothing?? [incredulous] :furious3:

Excuse me, I have to go break something now.... :wall:

You can't get muskets without building a cathedral I should have added. Arqs you can get.

Sheesh. *Now* you tell me. ~

X_X why? and can you destroy the cathedral later and still get muskets? what if you wait for the Dutch?

Sasaki Kojiro

If you wait for the dutch you can build muskets and arqs at the dutch trading post.

If you accept the portugese offer you can train arqs at the trading post without going christian. If you build 6 churches and a cathedral you can train muskets at the trading posts. If you destroy cathedral I assume you lose that ability, there is no reason to destroy cathedral though because it will be bringing in 1200 koku a year minimum.

the reason to destroy the cathedral is to prevent christianity.. the Dutch sound a lot better, and cooler.

Don't listen to this guy. The Dutch will rape your houses and set fire to your women. They're Eeeevil.

You're Dutch, Drisos? I wasn't aware of that! :shame: Then again, I probably shouldn't be surprised. The Dutch have such a (relatively) large contingent on these boards, that I should probably just assume everyone here is Dutch unless/until I find out otherwise. (It's a conspiracy!) ~;p

Funnily enough this was always my strategy, not through any kind of skill, but through sheer luck and possibly accident! I always accepted the Portuguese but never build any churches. I've never seen the adverse affects. IIRC you can continue building temples so long as you never build a single church.

Some guys have all the luck! [mock sigh] I had always just assumed (a dangerous word, I know) that if one accepted trade with the Portuguese, that you simply weren't allowed to build temples anymore, and that you had to build churches from then on out. Oh well, better late than never, I guess. ~
