Did anybody conquer the papal states yet? And what happens if yo do? Will His Holiness just disappear for good, will he "live on off-map" or is there some kind of re-appearance like for example a crusade to liberate Rome?

If you take Rome, the Pope asks for another Catholic country to give him a region so he can go on existing.

Thx for the answers, I had forgotten about that, think it was in some announcements... another question, does excommunication end if your king or the pope dies, as in MTW, or will you remain excommunicated until the pope revokes it?

Its like in MTw, where if either your king or the pope dies, the excommunication ceases.
