View Full Version : Everyone hates the HRE?
What's the deal with that? lol seriously. I had a campaign on H/H where everyone around me except milan was allied to me, and half of them were allied or neutral to milan. The pope was about to excommunicate them for christ sake..then all the sudden bam. Venetians, Denmark, Hungarians, Polish and the Sicilians all invade me at once. The pope favors me the most and I didn't offend any treaties to any alliances or anything? is this just a run of bad luck? did anyone else have this happen to them? now i have to play as a new faction :(. i liked the hre too but i don't feel like trying over again to many new factions to try:)

Why are you surprised? You're playing as the HRE, everyone will hate your guts regardless.....lol.
Seriously though, although I don't have the game yet, I'd expect to be stabbed in back on all fronts if I were to decide to play as the HRE. On the other hand maybe you just had terrible luck. If so, feel free to try another faction and come back to the HRE again once you feel better to give it another go.

Hmmm... That does not exactly sound all that fun. I was planning to play either France of HRE first, but after hearing this, I may be reconsidering.
Does anyone know if France is hated and attacked by everyone like that?(Other that the obvious quick English attack)
I chose Spain and I must say that the HRE is in a constant state of war between nations around itself. The pope excommunicates them regularly and Milan is constantly attacking them. They must be provoking a lot of nations.
France declared war on me 3 times already and everytime I asked for a cease fire and demanded a tribute (5000 gold min.) they always accepted. I don't get it, but I like it.

France has it's issues here and there but they're not nearly as screwed over as the HRE gets..Of course England is a threat..other than that the Spanish are content and Milan will probably attack. Not that bad.

This is exactly why I was dumbfounded why everyone else said in another thread that Portugal has the hardest position in the game. What a joke........it's the Selucids errrr I meant the HRE by a loooooong shot.

Yeah, this isn't just an isolated experience...there are bounds upon bounds of threads over at the .com of people complaining about the HRE being impossible. They'll probably make a sticky soon dedicated solely to people's strategies to not get schooled in 20 turns as the HRE.

The HRE on VH was extremely tough in Medieval as well. I suppose this just continues the trend.

Ah, back to the good old days of Medieval. I remember taking on France, England, Italy, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Sicily, and the Pope all at once on VH.
Needless to say, I lost. But I did manage to conquer France, England, Denmark, Northern Italy, Hungary, Poland, and Northern Spain.

It gets more exciting when you are attacked on all fronts.. If I were you I'd continue through it.. In my first campaign on RTW, that is Carthage VH/VH, I barely survived through the first 50 turns or so.. But it was well worth it fun-wise!
to sum up what you said and answer that, Id love to play the HRE, love the sudden conflict...kinda why i wanna play the selucids again.
