View Full Version : Common problems with desc_names.txt?

I'm having problems trying to get new names for the factions. One faction, romans_julii, has only 10 names and 1 surname. Yet when I play Custom Battle, it CTDs most often than not. I've triple-checked the names and they appear legit.
Is it because of the 1 only surname? Is there any limitations to the minimum or maximum number of names we can use?
I had that same problem. I just guessed there werent enough names, so i copied all of the names and pasted them right after each other until each name list looked a respectable length.

I do not think it is the lack of names (I have about 10 names or so for Rohan and Dunland both in CI). It may be because of the surname, as I seem to remember there was a surname issue for the Roman factions, but that should be easily checked by adding a few more.
I have found that it is best to not delete any names from names.txt (and lookup, if you're working on 1.5?), as that seemed to cause inexplicable CTDs, and was just too much work for no benefit.

Here's a weird thing I noticed: sometimes, the game would use the surname as the name of the captain. I thought this would've looked weird in RTW since if you're barbarian, your captain could have the name "Of Britannia" or something.
So maybe the use of surnames as first names for captain is a Roman culture thing?

I keep all symbols and spaces out of my internal name variants, and only use them in the external name variants. I keep all name lists in excel, and use the concatenate command to add brackets around the words to make sure my lists in descr_names.txt match the names.txt file. Don't leave anything to chance. Make absolutely sure they always match up, and also I never type names into to descr_strat, I only copy and paste them from my descr_names.txt file. This way it reduces the chance for errors. And I'm talking about huge names, and thousands of them (our EB dn.txt file has more than 10,000 last time I checked), and (knock on wood) we don't have any problems at all with names. Internal names can get long, but just leave all that other stuff for the external variants (that show). We've got internal variants like: Nvmerivsmessienvs or IlWatarYuhanem or arvernimocTaximagulos or Ornithopoleosphoinikikes or Stratonikeiasbabyloniakes. Use Excel and make your life a lot easier keeping them straight and reducing errors. I always play it safe too and have more than 10 names in each category though. And make sure you don't have repeated names in descr_strat.txt for characters (captains is ok). Oh, and I replace all spaces with nothing. So sometimes a space that pops up at the end of a word doesn't hurt anything.

I am using excel. It'd be stupid not to, since I'm doing a total conversion.
Still, that doesn't explain the faction romans_julii taking a surname to use for a captain's name.
