I'm sure there's been tonns of similar threads in the forums, But now the game is out in Europe (and soon to be out in the US) we can see what features did, and didn't make it in and if the features we were hoping for made it into the game.

Viking Invasion introduced the feature of being able to quickly save before going into a battle.

Babarian Invasion gave us Swimming units, Night fights, and reintroduced civil wars (kinda)

What new 'big' feature do you want to see in the expansion?

Myself, to be honest, I'd like to see swimming back, and the civil wars (badly)

Also i'd realllllllly like the expansion to give us the option of doing a Multiplayer campaign of somesort.

One word: titles.

Sheogorath

1. MTW style titles

2. Extend the map into Central Asia at least, preferably into India as well. China would be a bad idea though (IMO) since they would pwn the world in a TW-style game.

3. Maybe extend the campaign into the 1500/1600's? Warfare was still pretty medieval at that point, only with pikes and muskets and such. Plus it would be fun to face off a 1600's style army against, say, some Normans.

4. Speaking of Normans, move the campaign start date back and let us invade England!

5. Naval battles >_>

6. Make it so my spearmen dont act like blithering idiots, IE: When told to line up behind a gate they promptly lose all sense of cohesion and wander around like headless chickens.

7. Expand the New World! And make more NW factions playable. I want to kick some Aztec ass as the Inca.

8. Bring back the shield-wall formation, its realistic and bloody useful.

9. Maybe spearmen should be just a LITTLE more effective against cavalry? Mine seem to break instantly when hit with mailed knights.

10. I demand a playable Ireland ;)

11. Winged Hussars for Poland!

12. Make gunpowder-units non-mentally disabled, IE: They actually fire simultaniously within the unit, and use rotating fire properly. Rotating fire serves little purpose if you wait for the guys behind you to finish reloading before you fire.

13. Fix the AI's tendancy to make increadilbly stupid alliances. Spain and the Moors?!

Have a Viking Invasion not as a provincial campaign but a whole new campaign (like the RTW-BI relation). And include the New World.Vikings reached America, so its accurate. I want to have Vikings beat some native butt (Aztecs vs Vikings, a dream come true).

I think a kind of before and after thing like they did with Rome (Alexander/BI) would be good.

For the "before" expansion, I would like to see a Viking Invasion-style game, but on a larger scale. They covered far more territory than the first Medieval game gave them credit for (they reached North Africa and Constantinople). This would bring many more factions into play like Kievan Rus and The Carolingians (the real Holy Roman Empire) and even the Roman Empire itself (Byzantium). Basically, the same period covered in the original Viking Invasion can be done on a far larger scale and still have historical significance (widespread economic collapse and military transformation leading to "feudalism," if you believe in that sort of thing, and the rise of the Church, etc.).

For the "after" ..well the sky's the limit, but to still be called "Medieval," they're already overstepping their on the timeline; the game as it is threatens to dip into the renaissance. I am not complaining, if I had it my way I would have a single game that sapnned thousands of years. As far as the expansion is concerned, It is impossible without adding the New World and the Far East to the campaign map.

Thinking about this makes me wonder where the next game is going to take us. How about Earth: Total War? Scary.

Civil Wars
A second campaign, expanding into Asia (even if it means dropping the New World)
Expanded nation roster for the main campaign (Kievans, Serbs, Bulgarians, Irish, Aragonese, Armenians, Lithuanians, Swedes, Norse, Navarese, Genoese)
Staring Periods back in!
An option to have the nations start Sholder-to-Shoulder (i.e. not rebel buffers, faction borders toch from the start)
The ability to change religion. I want to be able to take my faction Orthodox so The Pope will stop bothering me with excomunication (and start bothering me with crusades instead)

Oh, and i'd like to see factions breaking apart into new, smaller factions (the Almoravids and Almohads falling out, Burgundy appearing etc.)

I would like a before and after campaign like Lord Condormanius suggested, but, that could link together if you wanted to. You could have a post Barbarian invasions era with the Vikings in 791 or so, that goes up to 1066. You could either play that campaign and the vanilla separately, or you could play from 791 to 1530 in a super campaign. In a second campaign you could cover the renaissance and the beginnings of imperialism. This one, too, you could link together. So you could have a ultra campaign that stretches over almost a thousand years (800 to 1700). Awesome.

Edit: I like the extended campaign idea because I remember crushing everyone in Viking Invasions as the Saxons and turning Britain into an impenetrable fortress... only to have to play as the bloody Normans in the vanilla campaign, with all my work undone. :(

(1) Naval Battles. Just naval battles. I want the whole expansion to be: Naval battles. Put all of your work into that and do it right, and you've effectively doubled the number of things to do in the game.

(2) Naval Battles.

(3) erm... burning pigs?

Oooh. Just remembered the one thing i've always wanted ever since the Shogun days.

(4) At the end of a battle, when your enemy is routing and you are chasing them down across the map, if you switch the game speed to x3, the game must automatically play the Benny Hill theme tune.

You mean civil wars are no longer present ? What about appearing of new factions (like Burgundy, Switzerland...) ? Also, are there still historical characters (joan of arc) ?

I'd like a Napoleonic expansion...

Lusted
11-13-2006, 16:07
Erm, this is an EXPANSION, not a new game which would probably required for Napoleonic or Asia suggestions, which would take a few years at least.

Personally i'd like to see a Viking Invasion revisit, or something to do with the New World.

Well I'll be foolish too, MP campaign game please ;)

Naval battles and titles as mentioned above are desperately needed, and a Napoleonic era game will probably be the next game (I hope) - great mod for RTW tho.

So if there aren't civil wars whats the point of the princesses bar the obvious alliances? The first born son of both nations is effectively a useless title then?

I'd like to see a 'Colonial' Expansion, it would really only need additional maps and units (already have artillery and muskets) - Maps of North America, Africa and India maybe?

Spendius
11-13-2006, 16:23
Or, at least, a multi player campaign game with only automatic battles ?

A MP map campaign!

MP Campaigns, the Holy Grial of Totalwar. I want it too:charge:

But let's get more realistic: Since they have included america in this game, it would be intersting for me to play a "Mesoamerica: total war" thing. the time frame could be about the same as in mtw2, but it would be more in-deph.

That, or Viking Invasion2, either of those would work for me.

Second the naval battles idea! I think naval has been glossed over to this point. Did naval improve at all with Medieval II? Please don't let is be like Rome. Having to chase one lone guy on one ship around with an entire armada lest he blockade my capital was truly a pain. I mean how exactly does a ship of sail rout faster with less men? At the very least there should be a speed modifier for sailing below half strength (like Sid Meier's Pirates!)

Second the naval battles idea! (like Sid Meier's Pirates!)

Imperial Glory did a good job with the Naval Battle aspect. They actually do realtime naval battles. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the game, it is like Medieval: Total War (I) in the Napoleonic Era...and that is being very kind. I guess it's okay, but the naval battles are done well.

Its harder to do in the ancient and Medieval periods...but it can be done. The style of warfare just has to be more realistic than the RTS games portray.

I would the campaign to start you at around 1500 and end at 1750 or something. You could reuse most units and map graphics so it wouldnt take much effort. Im wasnt really interested in other periods other than medieval and hellenistic but Pike and Musket changed that!

IPoseTheQuestionYouReturnTheAnswer
11-14-2006, 01:24
Well, that would kind of defeat the purpose of calling the game "Medieval" Total War.

:inquisitive:

You seem to be confused between the meanings of the terms 'expansion' and 'completely new game'. If its an expansion to Medieval 2 Total War, then it will most likely be called: Medieval 2 Total War : The something something something.

For example, it should be called Medieval 2 Total War : Naval Combat. Finally.

Or indeed Medieval 2 Total War : The Benny Hill Years.

or my personal favourite: Medieval 2 Total War : Benny Hill on Boats.

The Rise of the Arabs would be nice.... Starting with the advent of Islam

Thirty Years War sounds fascinating whether it is an expansion or a new game. The religious wars in Europe and the odd dynamics that are set in motion with the occassional cross religious bedfellow would also allow new world machinations... Throw in the demise of Constantinople, the Rise of the Ottomans, and the schismatic church machinations and you have some interesting areas for new side games...

On the other hand, I don't even have the original game yet (nor does anyone else in the Nth American continent) so this all seems a bit - - premature... :clown:

WARDOGS! Medieval 2 - Total Dog War. Diferent types of wardogs.. tiny strike dogs, massive anti-cav dogs, expolding wardogs, and holy anti-muslim dogs for your crusading needs. Wardogs must form the backbone any serious fuedal army.
