View Full Version : Name this forum
Now that the M2TW is out, it is a good time to name this forum. We had a lot of good suggestions a while back:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=69319
I've narrowed them down to a shortlist of four based on the number of posts supporting them. The Citadel got far and away the most nominations, and I personally think that's the best name... not that I am trying to sway the poll or anything.
Note - "curia regis" is Latin for Royal Court or King's Court.
There were fewer suggestions for the MP forum. Now that M2TW is out, the name that leaps out to me is the "Tourney Field", as that is an actual building in the game. However, I've included in the poll two other variations on that theme suggested by members.
Please vote ONCE for the SP forum and once for MP. Note: the MTW SP forum is called the Main Hall and the MP forum is called The Jousting Fields.
I will leave naming the modding forums to the mod mods, but they have several some good names to choose from (The Armoury was a favorite of members but The Mason's Guild and the Inner Repository may sound good too).
Well, Tourney Field for MP sounds misleading as the MP forum is not about tourneys. Why cannot we use the old MTW names? Barracks and Jousting Fields are perfect names. If not, then I would suggest the name "Meeting Ground" for a general MP forum.
Also IMO the MP voting should be moved to the MP forum. ~;)

I agree with Cheetah. Why not name this place the Main Hall, and then re-name the current Main Hall?

I disagree. The Main Hall is, well, it is "THE" Main Hall. It has always been MTW-related and it would just feel.. wrong to name the M2TW SP forum the Main Hall.
Since MTW came out, my old lurking bones came to warmth of the Main Hall, in search of much needed information and help.
I would become deeply depressed seeing my beloved old Main Hall destroyed, put in ruins and occupied by M2TW posts...
Just my humble and conservative opinion :hide:
But I do agree with Cheetah the voting for the MP-forum name belongs in the MP section.
Again: :hide:

But the name 'Main Hall' doesn't really make any sense for the MTW forum any more-since it's no longer the 'Main' hall.

I voted for the great hall. All of the names are decent though.

I don't think I can do that - but I'll make a redirecting post there.

I don't find that funny at all. That's a classic example of push polling!
You should have just put the names up without comment.
BTW, I think the second entry "The Curia Regis", should just be listed as "Curia Regis".

Voted for Round table but citadel sounds good too... :2thumbsup:

I voted for "The Citadel" and "The Lists". The Lists sound so much better than the Tournament Grounds.

Yeah, I voted The Lists too, I think it's better but I guess it's too late now..
I voted for The Curia Regis for single player. Simply because it sounds posher that the others.
I don't really care what the MP gets (although I voted for the The Tourney Field) as long as it doesn't get The Lists. That just makes the forum sound like a terribly long list of very boring posts.

I would have prefered Royal Court over Curia Regis, somehow the former appeals more to me than the Latin counterpart. Citadel has too much off a military sound to me. But alas this is only a poll no discussion.
Cheers!

Well, you're discussing now, aren't you? But seriously, we did have a three page discussion about this a month or so ago - linked to in my original post. Take a gander and you'll see the poll choices above were the most frequently supported options in that thread. Curia regis was mentioned more than Royal Court.

Personally econ, I think you should have scrapped this poll and started a new one, since you irretrievably prejudiced the outcome at the outset with your strong endorsement of one particular choice. You might as well have just said "I'm going to name this forum The Citadel", at least then those of us who preferred a different name wouldn't also have to endure watching this ongoing farce of a poll.

Oh, please...
Sorry I have offended your sense of natural justice, Screwtype, but another poll would just produce the same result. Look at the three page thread I linked to before. The citadel is way ahead of any other choice and I did not endorse the "citadel" once.
As for prejudicing the poll, I am not sure why I am more influential than any other poster in this thread nor why I should not express a personal opinion.
You disagree and I respect that, but you've made the same point twice here now. If you want to pursue this further, I suggest the Watchtower is the appropriate forum for that discussion.

I'm not convinced of that. On that previous thread, some of the choices weren't suggested until well into the thread, whereas Citadel was suggested right at the outset.

Because you're a mod, ie an authority figure. But whether you were a mod or not, I think opening the poll with a comment like "BTW, by far the most popular choice so far is A" is heavily prejudicing the reader toward choice A in my opinion.

I only made the point a second time because I had a sense that perhaps you thought I was joking the first time around, and I wanted to emphasize that I meant what I said. True, this is hardly a matter of world shattering import, but I do feel it was a very unfair way to conduct a poll and I am still somewhat annoyed that it happened quite frankly.
At the same time, I can see how you might have been tempted to phrase things the way you did, and I would probably have done just the same in your place, but from where I'm sitting right now I see it from a very different perspective.
But yes, perhaps you're right I should take it up in the Watchtower. Maybe the org could do with a few rules about the conduct of such polls? It might help to avoid similar disagreements in future.
I'm not convinced of that. On that previous thread, some of the choices weren't suggested until well into the thread, whereas Citadel was suggested right at the outset.
But not by me. It was one of seven mentioned in the first two posts of serious suggestions. None of the others made it to the shortlist (armoury was popular, but I've kept that for the modders to use).

I disagree - I thought it would be unfair to the 70+ posters who had chewed over the issue in the other thread to completely ignore the balance of opinion expressed in it. I don't have the figures to had, but I laboriously tallied up the nominations and the Citadel was 3-4 times as popular as the next most popular choice (armoury?).
I only made the point a second time because I had a sense that perhaps you thought I was joking the first time around ...I felt still somewhat annoyed that it happened quite frankly.
Just because I chose not to respond to your first post does not mean I did not recognise its sentiment, which is reciprocated, by the way.

What, you mean you were annoyed by my objection? Touche, LOL.
But having had my say on the matter, I seem to be pretty much over it now. Hopefully you feel the same way. Anyhow, I really have better things to worry about, and I'm sure you do too ~:)

I voted for 'The Curia Regis' although I would prefer just 'Curia Regis'. This sounds more appropriate to MTW. I kinda like my French History so I am a bit biased. The Citadel just sounds too, too corny.

I voted for Curia Regis and The Lists. As someone else already stated, Citadel sounds a little too overtly military (to me, at least); and anything with Tourney/Tournament in it simply sounds a little misleading. I don't consider it a big deal either way, though. I'm sure I'll be fine with whatever names are selected.

voted for my own suggestion: The Hall of the Round Table
Why not name this place the Main Hall, and then re-name the current Main Hall?
I understand the logic behind this. However, my sentiments are the same as AndresTheCunning's.
Isn't The List a Scottish entertainment guide for Edinburgh and Glasgow? :inquisitive:
Whilst I am still in my "still got the clearcoat!" junior member status and hence cannot vote, I would still like to throw in my :2cents:!
My vote for SP forum name is: "Ni! Peng! and Nuuuuuuuuu-womp!!"
My vote for MP forum name is: "Ecky ecky ecky ecky p-KENG Zoooppngngnngng!!"
Citadel and The Lists if I have to vote for official names. :shame:

Yes - that's possible; most forum names have no "the".

Heh, I actually just came to this thread to ask for the "The" to be put back in. Citadel by itself just seems odd, imo "The Citadel" seems...just...better.

Yep, The Citadel would be a lot better IMO.
Either way, you should change the forum description.
Citadel;
CA's Latest Title
thats not right.
Good point, Glaucus. It's now sorted.
On the missing "the", I have some sympathies with those who want it back. But if you look at the forum index, "Citadel" does not look wrong. It may take a little getting use to. And of course in posts, we will always refer to the Citadel - just like you say the UK or the Houses of Parliament. But in an index of countries or buildings, you would usually lose the "the".
Thanks for voting everyone!
