Apparently, the Royal College of Surgeons, with backing by none other than the Church of England itself, has decided to follow Holland's lead: Some sick babies should be allowed to die (http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,1945866,00.html). According to the Guardian, verified in other sources, and in truth, I saw this first in the Daily Mail, there are times when sick babies shouldn't be treated and they should be allowed to die. No specifics on what those conditions should be, only that it should be a decision made by the delivering physician, unilaterally, regardless of the wishes of the parents. According to the Daily Mail, the Church of England Bishop said financial cost of treatment SHOULD be an important factor in the decision (neither confirmed nor denied in the Guardian story).

I know Universal Healthcare can be expensive, but surely this can't be the answer...

I've heard the argument made for mercy killings, I don't agree with it, but I can understand it. But for cost savings, the doctor has the authority to take a child's life, in opposition to the parents' wishes? We're not skirting the line anymore, this is full blown eugenics....
