Do you have a DVD drive, because I believe it is a DVD not a CD.

What do you mean? I NEED A DVD DRIVE TO PLAY THIS GAME?! Sorry please elaborate....
Ok... when you bought this game you got 2 DVD's to install you need to put it in the DVD driver.. that's it... ( btw don't put the 2 dvd's together at the same time)

system requirements that I have seen posted are
English version of Microsoft® Windows® 2000/XP.
Celeron 1.8GHz Pentium 4® (1500MHz) or equivalent AMD® processor.
512MB RAM.
8x Speed DVD-ROM drive (1200KB/sec sustained transfer rate) and latest drivers.
11.0 Gigs of uncompressed free hard disk space.
100% DirectX® 9.0c compatible 16-bit sound card and latest drivers.
100% Windows® 2000/XP compatible mouse, keyboard and latest drivers.
DirectX® 9.0c.
128MB Hardware Accelerated video card with Shader 1 support and the latest drivers.
Must be 100% DirectX® 9.0c compatible.
Monitor must be able to display 1024x768 resolution or above.
so looks like you need a DVD drive.
I asume the box has this on it as well.

Take a gander at the bottom of the box, where it says "PC DVD-ROM"... http://home.comcast.net/~patrickjs1/sa/emot-downs.gif
The install is almost 8 gigs, which would take a retarded amount of CDs. The move to DVD is way overdue.

The one I have was about $40 (USD). Not an expert on what kind (I am sure someone here is)...Also I installed it myself and I assume if you have someone do this it would cost more...

I can install it myself. Where did you buy it from?
If you're going to run out and buy one, you could try a local computer store or Office Depot. I prefer to order online (it's cheaper that way) but that takes a few days. I think my DVD-ROM drive only cost something like $20-25 plus shipping. I'm not certain brand matters at all, since many are made by the same people.

Games have been on DVD exclusively in Europe for going on 5 years now... I find it hard to believe that this would cause problems in the US!

If you are in a hurry:

If you can wait a couple of days:

If fact, the newegg one with over night FedEx shipping is still cheaper than the CompUSA one...

What an ignorant statement.
What major PC games have been DVD in Europe? The major ones I can think of off the top of my head would be special editions of popular games. 5 years...? :inquisitive:

LOL, I can sympathize with your consternation.
Exactly the same happened to me when I bought Civ4 a year or so ago and tried to run it from my CD. Nothing happened!
It finally installed when I tried running it from my DVD drive. It's only then I realized it was a DVD not a CD! I think there's still an angry post of mine on the Civ4 heavengames forum about the stupid "broken" game that wouldn't install :laugh4:
dose anyone know wat im doing wrong ??
i go in to the descr_strat and change the turns from 2.00 to 0.5 and when i try to save the settings it tell me to make sure the path and file name are correct.and it tell me to press ok to save again but then i get a pop up saying
"this file only exist with read only attributes please use a differnt name" so i change the name a lil bit then save it. but then i go and see if the changes i made worked. but no dice .
can some one tell me what im doing wrong please thank you
Eh, just think of it this way. You won't have to buy a DVD drive later ^^;. I remember having to buy a DVD drive for Oblivion, more and more games are going DVD only. But then again, most DVD drivers are getting pretty cheap. Mine is fast, reliable, and was only 20 bucks at Fry's!

You have to remove read-only attribute from the file before you can edit and save it. Right click on the file, choose properties, a window with file properties should pop up, find a checkbox read-only, uncheck it, click OK. Now you can edit and save the file...

Looking at my shelves, every game I've bought in the past 2 years is in DVD format, bar Psychonauts which I imported from the US and came on 5 CDs but was DVD for its European release later. I have other games from earlier on that are on DVD, too, but as I'm at my university house I don't have them for exact naming. I do remember the standard edition of No One Lives Forever (2000) coming on DVD.
No country bashing on the Org, please.
