I guess this is the forum to ask.

Does anyone now anything about HD (tv) standards ? Specifically i'm interested if there is a difference between EU and US standards. I thought the max standard resolution was 1920x1080, but televisions in showrooms don't seem to be like this, most are 1024x2080 (using rectangular pixels I assume).

Also, has the refresh rate been standardized or do we have to deal with 50/60 Hz US/EU differences again ?

Not that i have anywhere near the amount of money to buy a top of the range HD tv, but I'm curious.

I think most HDTVs use 720p, whilst the top few use 1080p or i.

Refresh rate is all rather confused at the moment... I suspect everything uses 60hz, but the actual framerate, especially for 1080 stuff, can be really low. Bandwidth issues.

The Xbox360 and PS3 and most broadcasts all seem to be at 720p. 1080p is something of a pipe dream still. PS3 claims to use it, and the Xbox360 added support recently, but still.

Of course you get 'p' for 'progressive' and 'i' for 'interlaced'. In theory p looks better, although reviews generally seem to find little difference.

Am I the only one who dislikes these current LCD and Plasma tv's? Even on the new Beovision the imagery is so restless, and it's impossible to squeeze decent sound from these things.

How else does he afford the pimp shower and pimp tv ? I don't think it's because of pimping, since that's actually legal in the Netherlands I'd assume their profit margins are way below the global average...

Yeah Samsung make good video products. They are the poor man's NEC/Sony. When I bought my first PC in 2000 I could have had a generic 17" monitor for $150 but I paid an extra $300 for the Samsung. I'm still using it, it's an excellent monitor, although in my opinion it doesn't compare to the equivalent Sony. But then at the time the Sony was nearly twice as expensive again ~:)
