View Full Version : Need some advice here, friends.
A bunch of new PC games were released this week, including M2:TW. That one is a given; but what else out there appeals to people and why? I'm inclined to purchased WWII Online, as well. Anything else?
I see Gothic III is out. Is it any good?
I'm heading to my local EB Games in about 12 hours; so I thought I'd ask the best and brightest for recommendations. Aren't any better or brighter than here at the Org.
Gothic will be great eventually, these guys always release beta's with more bugs then a entomologists could ever hope to collect
I hear nothing but praise for that Company of Heroes game, there also is a thread about it here in the Arena.

Neverwinter Nights 2 is very popular here, though it is quite buggy from what I've heard and an absolute system hog (worse than Oblivion).

Oblivion isn't bad.... Ran Fine on my Comp, though I have pretty good stuff since I ran it on Very High Setting with no lag..... :2thumbsup:

Re-read some of the threads about it and this might change. ~;)
If you like a good strategy game and don't mind a steep learning curve, I recommend any of the paradox games (Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria, Hearts of Iron). They're great, and you can have a game from 1066-1953. (Doesn't end if you destroy 2 of the 3 factions in Doomsday I think, 2 out of Axis, Allies and Comintern) The great thing about it is that paradox actually listens to its customers, unlike CA, and doesn't do things that make it more appealing for the larger (young) market (well, perhaps now, with the 3d map for EUIII but not before that's released).
Spore (http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3155057) came out on the 8th. I'm surprised no one here has talked about it, considering the fuss that was made when it was first announced.
As well, I enjoy the new Mortal Kombat game immensely after I forgive the awful writing and storyline.

Spore. Is that the one I saw a clip of from E3 with Robin Williams going up on stage to play with the character creation demo?

Yes. Unless there are multple, different clips of Robin Williams at E3.
I recall he designed some sort of creature.

It's just a preview, Spore isn't out yet.
My mistake. It was projected to come out in Novemeber, but now, I see that the release date has been pushed back.
Still, though...Mortal Kombat rules.

From what I have heard... Company of Heros is the worst RTS game around. I haven't played it, and it may depend on taste, but if you want a good RTS stick with Total War, me thinks.

Armed Assault (http://www.armedassault.com/), the semisequel to Operation Flashpoint. Though it's not yet out anywhere else than in Czech and Poland.
I've bought four games in the last week or two (when the wife finds out, I'm a dead man. :skull:)
M2TW obviously. To be honest, if you get this, you won't have much time for other games. I'm playing a turn a night and there are, what, a couple of hundred plus turns in it. It is a big game, basically MTW with RTW graphics (just what the doctor ordered).
Amazon have currently lost two in the post:
NWN2 - the big attraction for me here is that Obsidian are the guys who did Kotor2, which I loved, and some worked on the Fallouts and Planescape Torment, which are genre classics. I am hoping for a story heavy official campaign and in time mods that rival those for RTW. Plus I consider DnD a very reliable base set of rules, as is the Bioware engine foundation.
Warhammer 40k - Dawn of War: Dark Crusade - probably a mistake, but I am an occasional Warhammer minatures player and appreciated DoW even if it was an RTS. The expansion is standalone and apparently has a (very dumbed down) TW style campaign map.
The last is admittedly just a preorder:
Warhammer - Mark of Chaos - for comments, see Dark Crusade, although there is just a slight chance that it has enough Total War battle elements to make me appreciate it.

I'd advise everyone just to skip EB/Gamestop in general.
There are so many other stores that sell software without being run by pushy, obnoxious sales people...
Also, Mount & Blade is definitely worth the price of admission- so I'll second that.
Well, I grabbed M2:TW, of course (I'm not liking a lot of aspects, especially the invincible frigging inquisitors).
WWII Online was... wait for it... postponed. All of the web site had it released 11/14. EB Games said it would be in the UPS shipment arriving in the afternoon of the 15th. Go to the store yesterday and it wasn't in the shipment. Clerk looks it up, and release was postponed until the 28th. Screw that.
Gothic III looks like it'll need some patching, so I avoided it and Company of Heroes as well.
For now I'll just keep plugging away at M2:TW while wishing they'd gone back to the original M:TW campaign map and strategic game style instead of the cheesy R:TW-style campaign map and strategic game. Ah, well.

Unfortunately Gamestop and EB games are both the closest to me. In fact, the EB games is about a 2 minute car trip.
I tried Mount and Blade and it just didn't do anything for me. I need a strategic component to my gameplay. It comes from growing up playing all those wonderful old Avalon Hill board games like Blitzkrieg.

There are mods out for M&B that let you wage war on other factions; capture towns, wear them down by defeating their armies, etc.
It is the best value for money I've ever got for a game; I bought it for $12 a year and a half ago and I'm still playing it.

Total War is not an RTS. You are comparing apples and oranges.

I would have said that too a while ago, but now even CA is calling it an RTS...

Total war is an RTS just a totally diferent type - CoH is so far the best example of a Normal RTS (base building etc) which refines the Dawn of War gameplay perfectly making it the best example of that type of gameplay around
the Total war series is a completely different form of RTS which seperates the building from the fighting totaly and so trying to compare the 2 really isnt worth it

As a Gothic fanboy I have to agree there I fear.
I bought the last two games very late after release and they were fine but Gothic 3 likes to crash sometimes, has insane loading times and needs avery good computer to run properly, but once it runs, you get quite a nice living world, don't expect too much from the story this time though, it's very trimmed for freedom of choice, but I still like it, the world is huge and really beautiful(with the right hardware).
And it has another big advantage, it really made me appreciate Medieaval 2 when I saw the loading bar was so....fast in Medieval 2 and I could actually play the game 12 hours nonstop without a crash.:laugh4:
I know I'm an addict, where was that dutch clinic again?:help:

I seen Total War refered to as a RTT (real-time tactics) game, instead of an RTS. I believe this description is much better suited for it. RTT combined with TBS (turn-based strategy).

I agree, but they're marketing it as an RTS

Which puzzles me, as the turn-based campaign portion of the game is almost as big a draw as the battles. I actually view the TW titles as more of a TBS than an RTS, since so many more people play singleplayer as opposed to multiplayer.
In reality, though, Total War should almost be its own genre: TB/RTS perhaps? Or simply "hybrid" strategy game? I don't know.
From a SP campaign standpoint, it's really more of a 4X-type game, like MoO2/3. The battle engine is way more involved though, so I guess that's why people call it a RTS for the lack of anything else. But the strategy is turn-based, while the tactics are real-time.
