I just had the most unsettling campaign battle ever. I attacked a small rebel army who were standing on the slope of some mountains on the campaign map in Iberia. When i got to the battle there was a huge mountain cliff diagonally, spanning the whole of the battlefield. I got deployed at the bottom, the defending rebel army was deployed on top. Now, no big deal i thought, i'll just have to fight really tired from walking up, only to discover there was no path all the way to the top. There were 2 trails but they only lead halfway, i was unable to fight the rebels in melee, and the distance was too large for them to shoot me. So i was just left with the option of withdrawing my forces (battle time limit was off). Really disturbing.

On the minimap there seems to be a pathway, but as you can see there clearly isn't, attacking the rebels wouldn't even start my units walking.

That is actually quite funny, talk about the ultimate defensive position... It might be worth listing in the bug thread...

Only they forgot to build the castle.

I think i had something like that outside Zaragoza. A french army that was sieging the city withdrew, and when i forced the fight they were on top of such cliffs. I must admit i didn't even try engaging.

Yeah, that position seems to be near the French border in the Pyrenea (sp?) mountains that is also the border for modern day France and Spain. I also had that problem and I just gave in and withdrew my troops.

Well, happened to me too. I was trying to eliminate a "Come and get me, coward!..." kinda gang in Wales. Once the battle map opened, the rebels were sitting on top of a steep cliff with no way up to "get them"...

I have the same in Zaragossa, a powerful rebel army sitting there for about 30 turns now. I haven't tried yet to attack them from the other side, or auto resolve, which might work.

I've had this happen to me as well, i've posted about it at .com and CA know about it.

Yep, there're also several of such spots in Scotland and the middle of Italy.

On the next turn, did you encounter the same problem when approaching from a different direction on the strategy map?

i took an overwhelming force to make them retreat on the campaign map and fight them where i could actually touch them

btw, it was 2 squares W of Zaragoza, i just checked. I had attacked from the square E, the only 2 other directions to attack from are N and NE i think, maybe NW too. i imagine they'd still be up there and me way down here, although i can't test because i don't have a savegame file of it.

I'll try tonight, my rebels seem to enjoy the view so far
