View Full Version : What would you do if you were Forum Admin?

MSB
11-16-2006, 19:12
So what would you do. I would:

separate the Guides and put them in the respective game category.
separate the Entrance Hall into two parts: The Reception Room (for FAQs and asking questions) and the Junior's Guild (for talking about anything to do with the TW series).
separate M2TW single player into a "mechanics forum" (like the Ludus Magna for RTW) and a "standard" single player forum (like the RTW Colosseum)
create a "guides" forum for STW
separate the "Hard and Software" forum into a "Hardware/Software Review" forum and a "Software and Hardware Question" forum
split the watchtower into two with a "let's complain about moderators" type of forum and a "suggestions forum". It may have been done already by placing the backroom in there, but it is not exactly clear that that is it's purpose.
make a new M2TW skin
rename all sub-fora/fora that don't have a TW style name
add a new moderator for every forum. The idea of this is to save existing moderators time.
delete the Chivalry TW forum from multiplayer (it isn't used)
delete all old accounts that haven't posted for over three years
improve the spell checker by adding a certain hack
add a series of new skins from vB Styles to add even more depth to the forum skin selection
assign a moderator to the Watchtower

So what would you do?

Drink all the beer, download the pr0n stash, then resign. I don't think I would be willing to deal with the admin responsibilities, seems like waaaaay too much work.

Many of the suggestions in post #1 (especially the M2TW ones) may eventually be implimented. Give them time. That beer stash isn't going to drink itself. :barrel:

I have to second this. In fact, I think that if I were forum admin, we could skip right to the straightjacket and a padded room. I'd be sitting on the floor slumped in a corner, drooling, repeating my mantra: "So many bots; GAH! So many bots; GAH! So many bots; GAH!" ....And on and on....

MSB
11-17-2006, 08:38
I would also make it so that bots cannot post by having all Junior Members' post checked out by a moderator before they appear.
It would also be a three warning points and your out for ten days system. Get any further warning points and you are banned for an extra ten days (as in four warning point twenty days, five warning points thirty days etc.) every time until you get ten points and then you're out permanently.
I would set up a courtroom where admin discuss bad posts and who needs to get warning points.

Number one would be too much work + most Junior Members aren't bots.

We already have a warning point/temp ban system, and the admins/mods are plenty capable of deciding which posts need warnings.

We have enough moderators already, nice try though ~;)

For most of the other points, we could split each forum almost indefinitely but eventually we'd only have one thread per subforum. Guide type posts go in the sword dojo, no need for a separate forum.

If you have a specific spell checker hack in mind, post a link. I haven't had any problems with the current one, firefox 2.0 works great anyhow...

I would Ban every Person here that I hate, that once that is over with, I make a Fair set of Rules..

Don't like Me? Buh Bye!
Pee me Off? Ban for 3 days!
Start a Flaming Argument? Buh bye for a week!
Break my Rules? Don't expect to come back!

Gregoshi
11-17-2006, 19:59
Warman, those are pretty severe rules. Strong emotional influences are generally not the kind of thing that would make a forum popular with other people. People like to be treated fairly and not based on another's likes or dislikes (or hatred as you put it). A point to ponder: what if your rules were applied to yourself (here or at another site)? Would you pass muster or would you be looking for another forum to visit?

Having been involved in moderating here once upon a time, I can say that there is a big difference between having ideas and having the time, knowledge and dedication required to implement those ideas. That Tosa has run the Org for as long as he has gets him my utmost admiration, respect and gratitude. Same holds true for the moderators and assistant moderators.

First, pull a Napoleon on Tosa's Snowball existence; then, finish it with all this Watchtower "members can talk" inanity; after that, start a propaganda that the great TosaInu is, after all, not great (!) and that I am the greatest Admin ever, that the banning of Senior Member#101 because that person disagrees with my magnificent way of doing things is not only reasonable, but righteous and most necessary for the well-being of the forum and forum-goers as a whole. IP ban any potential Rebel Leaders like Ser Clegane, Barocca, and the entire moderating staff and replace them with lapdogs who'd do my bidding and my bidding only. Oh, and instagib anyone who uses "Gah." Can't have the old memories living.

Then keep saying that it's all well and good as the forum starts to go downhill real fast. ~:)

After reading all posts about swearing in this forum I would also:

Make a super strict swearing policy (e.g. no censored words, no asterisks or use of $,%,^,& and ! to hide swearing, no "bad" words, no words that could be perceived as being bad or insulting in any way, no words that you would not want a three year old to know etc.)
Anybody who breaks this policy gets the post in question edited and a "swear" type of warning point (that is two warning points).
Make these rules extremely clear by posting announcements of them in every forum/sub-forum
This would stop all swearing or use of rude words by anybody and would probably cure the current problems.

I wouldn't leave if that was to be imposed on the Org now.I would. Draconian rules = sucks. Heavy force to "solve problems" = crude, macho, Stalinist ways of escalating existing problems. Meaningless, overly harsh rules = very, very annoying. Being imposed on me = goodbye, site.

The URL avatars seem to be too big at present, otherwise I might turn them on and turn the others off. If they were scaled down a bit they'd be ok. I think it would be better if the URL avatar replaced the forum avatar instead of being additional, though I do understand why it doesn't and why the admin have configured it how it is now.

The URL avatars seem to be too big at present

The problem is that people who have no url avatar selected, get an enlarged system avatar (50*). There was a setting where people got a default large avatar, but that wasn't appreciated.

ŞaoŞin. The URL avatar system was under discussion for a while, and it was possible to have it 100% custom. Instead people wanted a theme and fixed size. Anyone can upload an avatar. They'll become public, but personal avatars are possible, time permitting.

caravel
12-08-2006, 14:23
I could go with personal URL avatars if they were restricted to the current size of the forum avatars and if there was only one avatar system and not two. Big avatars would look horrible. As to the animated gifs, they are annoying yes, but allowing only JPEGs would solve that surely? Personally I don't really care, but it may be popular, who knows?

Your's might not be "ugly", but other peoples might be and it would be a mis-match of sizes and styles. If people are to have them they should be:

All the same size (74 by 50 pixels)
All of a similar style (none from the Simpsons, South Park etc. all must have a TW theme)
They must not have any text on them.
They must look good.
They must be approved by admin first.
They must have the classic avatar border.
