How to save files in GIMP?

When I try to save my pictures in GIMP, it says "cannot save, unknown file type". Does anyone know how to fix this?

when you go to save and you get to the bit where you name the new file, a bit further down there is a bit that you can extend to show all the different file types, select the relevent one and then save... when i first started using GIMP this really confused me but you get used to it
