View Full Version : City viewing (not in the game)
hi all,
In RTW there was a nice little "View Settlement" button on the Settlement info scroll which allowed you to fly around your city and take in the atmosphere without having to worry about fighting a battle.
That button has gone, but I'm wondering if that ability exists somewhere hidden?

Not obviously, although it sounds like something that could be modded in as the information clearly exists inside the game.

Have been looking for it as well. I liked that little future and with the immensely cool cities in MTW2 it would be even greater.
i would love to see this return too.
I'm dying to see the London I've built up over the centuries, especially with that new huge cathedral I just had commissioned. The city is the envy of the world and I'll never get to see it, as it's never gonna' get attacked or anything. I sure wish it can be modded back in or included in the patch.

Got to agree with you lads,i'd love to see that feature reactivated if it was at all possible.
I was really disapointed when i read it was gone. Now i have the game i miss it even more.

I wanted to see how Venice looked in-game , I was very disappointed when I realized that this button was not an option (along with the "Set as Faction heir" button)

That is disappointing. Especially since the settlements are supposed to be more diverse than RTW.

I remember in RTW, you could click on settlement details, and you could see a view of the battle map of whatever settlement you chose, but why have they not placed this in M2TW, or is it at a different place?
quite, all this work gone into creating unique settlements like Krak du Chavaliers, Canearvon, etc, and no opportunity to see it in all its glory.
is there any technical reason why the feature ws abandonned, and if not, might we see it return in a patch?
I agree with several above in this thread: the atmosphere of the cities is really tremendous, much better than Rome, and it's a big loss not to be able to experience it without seige equipment.
Technically it's a matter of kicking on the battle map (already done), getting peasants and such to walk different paths at random (not terribly difficult), and that's about it. I'm guessing they simply ran out of time for it. I doubt it will be added in a patch though - major functional additions like that equal expansion-pack material.

I think they took it out.
Yes they did. See this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=72529) for a number of comments from people wishing it was still in.
Actually,I don't understand why they took that out?
Was it that hard then to include it?I don't think so

Maybe the problem was knowing how far to take it. I know that with RTW there were complaints about the people in the city strolling around - not enough of them, not representative of the units in the city etc.

It's a shame they got rid of this feature after all the work they've done to improve the look of settlements.
While I miss city view & had been hoping for introduction of Army View (zoom in to see your army march through the tile/mill around a camp) in M2TW, I guess I'd rather see good gameplay improvements like the better AI.

Agreed... There are still many improvements to be made with AI.
The MTW2 AI has significantly improved from RTW though. Meaning, it's not as nearly as stupid as it was. I doubt they can ever code an AI that can beat veteran players.
But the little features like the city view on battlefield map sugar coats the overall feel of the game. So I can enjoy and take my silly pride in having built such spectacular cities.... Other things to aim for in the game than beating the AI armies senseless….
I hope to see this little feature come back in one of their future patches.
Y'know, I wonder if there's some way we can get the attention of the devs about this small matter and perhaps they'll see enough people want it back in that, if it's a simple enough process of just re-including the code, they'll do it in an upcoming patch. A petition might be a bit too strong for something like this, but it'd be nice if something caught their eye.

On a slightly-different note, I'd find it entertaining if, after a battle, I could tour the battlefield before getting bumped back to the main map.

Being honest I never used it a whole lot in RTW..but on the other hand...I guess there is no harm in having it there....
Maybe we should knock up a list of all the stuff we would like in the game...aka this, pick faction heir, civil wars, glorious achievements:whip: ...etc....
Probably won't do anything...but hey worth a shot...to me these small touches add to the game as a whole..
Actually in a siege battle the other day I paused it just to look around my castle. And I was shocked to find the only "buildings" that I had constructed in the castle that actually appeared on the map was the chapel and the garrison barracks. No blacksmith, stables, etc. Maybe those buildings could have been 'inside' the castle proper, but maybe they took the view button out because they couldn't feasibly mix the new, unique cities with all the buildings you could possibly put in them.

Well no you have no direct control over faction heirs..(you could try to kill of one in battle say..if you wanted to)...but the button is gone..
And no civil wars are not really the same at all, as MTW1....
Rebels don't do a lot anyway bar mooch about the map.!

+1, I liked the city tour, it was a nice break occaisionally to see the handiwork of your artisans and engineers. Also really dislike the automated faction heir thing, maybe they should add some local politics (Favored by the People trait, Favored by the Noble Council Trait-that kinda thing) if they don't just want us always choosing the highest ranked general for this but the current random selection without any logic is the worst method they could have come up with. Additionally, I always played TW:M on glorious achievements mode-shouldn't be too hard to re-introduce them here as Major Goals of the Nobles council or Major Pope/Patriarch Mission-you get the idea. As far as bringing back civil wars, I'd like it to be part of re-vamped rebels system (and rebels shouldn't just be "at war" with everyone, this would address that issue too). Have the rebels go in say, 6 levels of intensity. 1) Peasant revolt(1 province in the countryside) 2)Urban Revolt (one city-contested within the city if possible) 3)Major Peasant revolt (2 or more provinces have their farming serfs in open revolt) 4) Major Open Revolt, rebellion in 3+ cities and/or provinces with some minor leadership 1-3 star general but not big enough to constitute a civil war unless he wins lands enough to make it to (TaDa!) 5) Civil War-possible new faction to be born, if happens to player faction, the player can take whichever side he or she prefers. There should be some minor conflicts at the local level like rebels are now, but there should be occaisions for greater concern too. I love the game, but hey some additions (Or re-additions as the case may be) can make a good thing even gooder! :whip: Now get to work Sega!! :egypt:

I had thought for sure that this would return! No civil wars and now, no city viewing! What has the world come to?:end:

It is in the game. I see little crossed sword icons all over the place where I fought big battles.

Yeah, Heroic Victories Markers still dot my maps too
I liked the city view in RTW. And now with these graphics, man I'd be looking at my cities all day.
So just as well it's not available. LoL.

For me, the strangest thing in removing this option is that, by doing this, so much work and creativity now goes unnoticed by players. Why do that? :inquisitive:
I always use "restrict camera" in battles (seems a little bit more realistic), and that means I cannot see not even my own city - and if it's a huge one, sure you miss a lot - I can inspect only areas near my units.
Once, waiting a for siege battle to end (yes, the "passive AI"...) I took a stroll on the streets using one unit... The buildings are rendered in beautiful details. The cathedral was awesome. There are everyday sounds going on (well that was a little strange, I confess, to find people that mind their own business while the enemy fights your fellow citizens 1 mile away, maybe getting ready to exterminate all the block? :inquisitive: )
Anyway, it was the first time I thought maybe that passive AI is there for some reason, man!
I would vote that option back.
Yeah it's amazing some of the detail on the buildings. I almost expected to find signs saying bakery, armorer, barracks etc. I've spent a lot of time looking around the settlements, gorgeous.
So now we know why city viewing was removed from the game. It would be so gorgeous that no one would play the game any more. We'd simply all sit in front of the comp with our jaws slack staring at the purty buildings.

Do you mean the crossed-swords indicator? That's still in there! I had one once after an Heroic Victory over two full french stacks in a bridge battle with my own 2/3-full stack. True, you don't see them as often as you did in Rome, where nearly all "heroic" victories (win against superior numbers, even if you have legionnaires and all your enemy has is peasants --> easy) became "Famous Battles", but they are still there.
I think army composition and unit quality are somehow taken into account now. In my case, it looked like it, as most of the enemy's units were Dismounted Feudal Knights while I had rather "rubbish" troops (Longbowmen and Mercenary Spearmen + 1 unit of Armoured Swordmen). Even better than getting the marker was getting a six-star, ten-loyalty, 20-year-old man-of-the-hour! :2thumbsup:
On topic of the OP, I also miss the city view. I liked it in Rome, where all cities where rather monotonous, I'd surely have loved it in Med 2. Shame they didn't include it. On a similar note, I was rather disappointed when I took Venice, expecting to find it on an island (maybe a mixture of siege and bridge battle), but it's a city just like any other.
