This actually made me chuckle (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2458696.html)

Sausages affected by draconian trade laws
By Simon de Bruxelles
A SPICY sausage known as the Welsh Dragon will have to be renamed after trading standards’ officers warned the manufacturers that they could face prosecution because it does not contain dragon.

The sausages will now have to be labelled Welsh Dragon Pork Sausages to avoid any confusion among customers.

Jon Carthew, 45, who makes the sausages, said yesterday that he had not received any complaints about the absence of real dragon meat. He said: “I don’t think any of our customers believe that we use dragon meat in our sausages. We use the word because the dragon is synonymous with Wales.”

His company, the Black Mountains Smokery at Crickhowell, in Powys, turns out 200,000 sausages a year, including the Welsh Dragon, which is made with chili, leak and pork. A Powys County Council spokesman said: “The product was not sufficiently precise to inform a purchaser of the true nature of the food.”

Certainly there are more absurd cases where these laws may be applied, aren't there? :idea2:

Just one more reason to despise government. Even well-intentioned governments eventually turn into idiotic messes of unreasoning bureaucratic silliness.

A funny story - but I am skeptical about the veracity of it. It has been published in the fiecely anti-EU Murdoch flagship - The Times.

*shrug* It'd be consistent, anyway. Bureaucrats may be a bit annoying, but they also tend to be thorough and get the job done. Would you believe our sausage-makers had to change their recipes upon us joining the EU, as most of their products contained so much flour they actually ranked as "bakery goods" or thereabouts...? A change for the better too, IMHO.

Hey, if I'm sold something called a Welsh Dragon, it better dang well have genuine dragon meat in it. Just like my hot dogs better be made with real dog meat.

Maybe, but this appears to have nothing to do with the EU. It is Powys County Council and their Trading Standards rules, which show British bureacracy at their finest.

One tends to forget that it wasn't the EU that really honed the idea of a "jobsworth". Only the Brits can muster the true level of pedantry required.

The Times cannot print bull just for the hell of it. As a respected (former) broadsheet by Royal Apointemnt I'm afraid they have to keep their noses fairly clean.

Not that they never twist the facts up at all, don't get me wrong.

This is one of those instances where the council has demostrated a complete lack of imagination in following our esteemed leader.

Correct. They leave that to the Telegraph instead.

No, all sources other than my own eyes and ears are tainted and deserve a higher level of proof. Believe half of what you hear and none of what you read.

...than if the Socialist Worker wrote Trust Managers eat newborn babies...

You need to work on your sentence construction. I can't work out if you are trying to say I am unreasonably applying the same skepticism to the Times as I would the Socialist Worker. Or whether you are saying I believe the Socialist Worker more.

Yup, and I also read the Telegraph, whith a mind that it is right wing biased.

That doesn't mean its wrong. It is a respected broadsheet and it also can't print poo-poo.

On the other hand since the Sun is never taken seriously it can print poo-poo, same goes for the Mirror.

That said there is a reason why it's called the Torygrath.

Ah, the British Beauracracy, got to love them!
This is almost a miniscule continuation of the English/Welsh (No love)hate relationship. This brings me to a conspiracy theory:
Are the English kings who kill dragons in those myths actually killing dragons? Or is it a metaphor for them slaying the People of the dragon, the Welsh?*
*Yes, I am a bit on the drunk side, but that makes it more entertayning.
