In my current english campaign I had to kill three consecutive Popes, plus a few preferati cardinals, before I managed to put my own cardinal on the papal throne.
Having a >10 skill assassin does help you know.

The big trouble about that is that if the preferati are in Russia or Eastern Europe(Turkey etc.) you have to move your assasin way to far to be effective. It's better to just kill them in consecutive turns (after getting elected)

How do u guys get such skilled assasins? Mine only last for a couple of kills, and then they get killed, never getting the chance of developing.

Accept the assassin guilds in your assassin producing cities. Then train them on low level merchants, priests, or captains. Preferably on rebels, or other hostile factions. Caught assassins aren't good for relations between nations as you might expect.
