What do u think about the general`s speeches?

You have to wait during the battle setup. When the cam is panning sideways it the zooms down to the general and delivers the speech. Some factions, though, doesn´t have speeches. I´, currently playing the Turks and no speeches for well over 200 turns and many more battles.
Text is good, but the intonation and energy they put in them is quite underwhelming.
Half of the time, they sound like they are talking to the guy beside them, not to a whole battlefield army.

Yeah, this is true.

I like the speeches a lot.

"Do you think such ugliness is catchy? If so, we better kill the enemies from the distance" - that's the one I like most so far.

I like them, it seems strange though, the Scottish ones are only one or two sentences. Basically everyone else i have played give a massive speech, but with the scots its more like 'Hurry up and kill these english c**ts and not much else

As Hungary I'm getting the abridged versions too. I know moneys been a bit tight, so the king must pay his writer by the word.

My favourite so far is a Venetian one comparing an army of Rebels to Priest's and Cardinal's a**holes.
my favourite was my crazy general lol.
"I want the pink elephats and the green pixies to lead the first wave. Have u met my wife? Gods she is ugly, she is probably fighting for that lot over there, and if she is, were buggered"
he also said some very mean things about their scottish wives.
and my english generals are not very nice about french men either.
love the speeches very interesting :D :D
Cheers Knoddy
I think the speeches are too corny to be good.
Plus they don't take into account the situation at hand.
Ie: Playing as Moors I had 3 low level units (including General's unit) being attacked inside a low level castle --- their defeat was inevitable. My General said something like: "Think about the horrible things they are going to do to your wives, then when you have thought on that, take up your sword!"
Kind of depressing that the General sorta made me feel responsible for the inevitable violation of women with not a darn thing possible for me to do about it.
I caught my brother's French general concluding his speech with something along the lines of:
"And to the enemy commander, I have this to say - GOD'S BUM! I've dropped my last bottle! 'BUGGER', as ze English say! Somebody's going to pay for this!"
He may have had a drinking problem I suppose, but I didn't stay long enough to check that. One thing I like very much is the occasional whiff of Shakespeare at the end of some speeches:
"Now let's to it pell-mell - And send our enemies to fry in Hell!"
The speeches were good for a while then an inquisitor had a barbe-que for king who had a comedian in his retinue. Anyways I haven't heard too many of the speeches but I'm guessing this line is'nt in "Now men let's get medieval on thier *****"

No but I liked when my Crusader invoked images of St George in one of his speeches.

"We should feel sorry for their horses for having to support such boney asses"
-Venetian general talking about the Mongols
"Have you tried the peas? They are very small and green. You should try the peas..."
-English king
I must say I look forward to hearing generals speeches and I always listen to them. I was going to post the one about the pixies as I heard it too but Knodddy beat me to it.
In the German version of the game I enjoy listening to [most] speeches too. I am playing the HRE and they have some mean & drunken Generals.
I am looking forward playing a Islamic faction now. I guess I won´t get the "where is all the beer at?" - question form a general.....

Maybe your general had a trait about making bad speeches !
I have the French version and was pleasantly surprised about the quality of the voices, as well as the acuteness of the words.

My favourite, which I have only heard from the English so far is "...and I say to the enemy general 'are you lookin at my bird? Come over hear and say that!'
I love them, and I always listen to them. There are some really rousing ones as well, when you have a really good general.

Well, prepare to be disappointed.
As far as I can see, only the HRE has long speeches.
Well at least the English have just 'one-line-speeches'.
(I loaded an 'german' save game in the english Version and suddenly the English General has more to say than just one sentence.)
PS: Though the german HRE speeches sound better than the one in the english version of the game.

I have been enjoying my French generals' speeches (some one lined, some go on for three or even four lines), even if they are all given in an 'outrageous accent'.
"I promise you loot, women, riches, glorrrry, uh... MORE loot, more women..."
As with Rome, it's the somewhat rarer, funnier traits that tend to win when it comes to speeches (I HAVE to bring my one prince that married a wretched Russian wife to battle to see if he comments on her), although I do still enjoy when I have to fight the HRE (who refuses to settle even though we barely engage each other anymore) and my generals go on about the 'sausage eating, beer drinking, Imperial pudding-heads'. :laugh4:

FYI, the length of a general's speech is tied into the size of the battle being fought: a small engagement, and he won't say much beyond a one-liner quip to motivate his men.
I also have the suspicion - and it's no more than this - that not all the accents have a full set of speech elements in the published game. They were written, but not necessarily recorded thanks to time constraints and the need to get everything to fit on a single disk. You should find that the major western European factions' generals will say more than anyone else's leaders.
BTW, most of the speeches attributed to mad generals are actually the result of too much drinking on his part. You'll recognise the mad generals and the potty-mouthed generals when you hear them, oh yes. :laugh4:
I have to say - I'm loving the speeched so far! I've been rolling around in laughter at the speeches from heavily dreaded generals who are good speakers and like a drink :furious3: :laugh4:

So is that true for non-English versions of the game too? Or is it like SirRethcir says, that only the Germans in the German version have longer und funner speeches? Good job btw. Captain.....

Since smoking hashish was very popular in the middle-east during the Middle-ages it would be a little amusing if you could get stoners as generals rather than drunkards.
I've seen a lot of short ones, many mid sized ones, and a few long ones from the Byzantine generals. However, nothing so far has compared to the morose general from RTW who "didn't want to be here myself, but my mother said I'd better make a reasonable showing of it all, so here we go."

I have had one instance of my English general (before attaking Antioch as part of a crusade) announced that the attack should be "lead by the green pixies and pink fairies"...
I am going to have to keep a closer eye on him...

Unlike RTW they do not start immediately, you have to wait for the closeup of your general before he starts speaking...
As the Turks, i waited on the camera to pan, then getting close, no speech. Then i heard the cheers from the soldiers as if reponding to one...
Seems half done, to me.

Yep, the Turks have no speeches :(
Whoever did the voices for Spain did a great job, I'm thoroughly enjoying pre-battle. And I think CF is right, it does seem that three-unit battles are just single-line speeches, whereas some of my crusader-army seiges have gone on quite a while. A good mechanic, I think.

I enjoyed the English speech when I was facing a French army.
"It is true that the French are better lovers then fighters...ask any goat, sheep, pig or other farm animal! *Huge cheer*" I nearly wet myself laughing at that one :beam:
I actually got a speech (well, one line) as the Turks today. Oddly enough it was a really small battle against brigands, but my Turkish generals never have anything to say when they are leading massive armies against full stacks of Greeks.

There are speeches, but short ones. Only the HRE speeches are in full length.
In the German Verision, 400MB of sound files are missing.
If that's not an indication.

My English general keep going on about god and how he will defeat there enemies and that the french are godless farm animal lovers interesting thing he doesn't have a lot of piety he also said i quote
''We are doing the Scots a favour by dying here they wont have to come back to there horrid wives ,women better used as fishing bait '' something like that

Alright, I'm playing a game as the Danes...for some reason, ALL the speeches are short. I've had some pretty epic battles, but no long speeches to go along with them.
Anyone have any ideas why?

Because they got the eastern European language and they don't have long speeches it seems.
"The French, it is said, are better lovers than fighters. This is true, ask any pig, goat or other farm animal"

as the english and sicialns the speaches are fine, lengthy and sometimes amusing.
i like the way the sicilan general always lectures about killing muslims as the camera pans over my muslim archers!
as the poples the speaches were never realy more than a sentance - it just seems the game wasnt finished properly to me.

But I swear that they had long speeches when I played my first game with them (had to restart a time or two, just to get the hang of things)
Ah well...

Are you sure that's the reason? I'm playing Poland and I'm getting nice variety of long speeches.

What I learned from RTW, and I imagine it'd be the same in M2:
The "official" 5 factions (England, France, Spain, Venice, and that other one?) have all of their speeches written and acted out. The other factions have variations in the quantity of their speeches - it would seem the Scots only have one-liners, while the Turks have almost nothing.
Also, the speech bits are organized by accent/region. Thus, even though Sicily isn't one of the "major" factions, they still have full-length speeches because it just borrows the sound files from Venice.
On the other hand, the Scottish have seperately recorded voice files, and I'm sure CA didn't think it was worth the time/money to record out hours worth of speeches for just one nation.
