Part 3: Analysis

This was all done by eye from the campaign map, with some simple coding to extract the list by resource. I have probably missed a few things, so let me know if you spot any omissions. Ta.

If youre trying to corner the market in a particular resource to gain a monopoly, and thus reap whatever bonus the game gives you as a result, the best choices would seem to be:

Spices
Grain

followed closely by:

Cotton
Fish
Ivory
Marble
Silk
Sugar
Sulphur
Tin

Once you discover the americas, obviously Chocolate and Tobacco should be fairly easy to monopolise.

Anyone want to try to determine what bonus you actually get for having a monopoly? My brain is too fried to try right now.

How true.

However, there are large areas with very few resources. Interesting research.

Interesting stuff. Now all we need is a list telling the relative value of the different resources.

Good job, but the list is incomplete. There is definitely silver in Cracovia (I've even built a silver mine there) and there is also sulphur in the same province (just north of the city of Cracovia).

I've compiled a preliminary list from my research. Not likely to be 100% accurate, but I think it should be pretty close. Hopefully we'll find out the definite order when we get the unpacker:

2^Resource|Value
4^=Amber|=12
4^=Chocolate|=15
4^=Coal|=4
4^=Cotton|=8
4^=Dyes|=8
4^=Fish|=5
4^=Furs|=3
4^=Gold|=20
4^=Grain|=5
4^=Iron|=9
4^=Ivory|=12
4^=Marble|=10
4^=Silk|=12
4^=Silver|=12
4^=Slaves|=8
4^=Spices|=12
4^=Sugar|=10
4^=Sulphur|=5
4^=Textiles|=8
4^=Timber|=6
4^=Tin|=6
4^=Tobacco|=15
4^=Wine|=8
4^=Wool|=6

Anyway, I also have an Excel spreadsheet with all resource locations, with an easy method for calculating the distance to each resource from any given point (just change the DistanceFrom coords). You can download it from here (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/i/M2TW/ResourceLocations.zip).

Think that'll have to wait until we can unpack the relevant data files after the patch - the final value is dependent on far too many things to even attempt to guess.

Edit: I guess while i was typing this therother proved me wrong ;-)

Nice catch. List updated. I'm sure there will be other omissions (notably Tin, which is pretty hard to spot) so keep em coming.

Not sure how much actual use this list is, but its nice to have a hobby innit?

Great, stuff! Thanks Davey and therother. Hopefully with this I can get my merchants going in my English campaign. For whatever reason it's been much more difficult to get my merchants established with that faction than it was for either my French or Danish games.

Added a few more resources. Think the list is 100% now.

Interestingly there are a couple of resources that are invisble on the map.
Iron : 128,136 - Metz
Timber : 105,129 - Caen
Slaves : 167,182 - Stockholm (not actually invisible, but hidden behind the word 'Stockholm'.

One would assume that such cities on the Sea like Dublin would have a fish resource.

That would make far too much sense.

There would seem to be a listing of resources starting at about the second page. I've not had the chance to do any comparing though, and have given up on merchants as a means of making money...

Playing as Venice I have 4 merchants sitting on Constantinople silk each making about 300 fl per turn. Not too shabby in the early part of the game, I'd suggest.

[B]FALL IN GOLD PRICE? /B]

I have noticed interesting occurence last night. While getting to Timboctou with two new merchants (to replace the aging one), I had a prediction of income of about 80-90 FL/turn for Gold for each of them (these were youngsters - finance 2). The old merchant there had about 180 FL or so per turn.

Suddenly, just on the turn of arrival to gold mine the per turn profits of the new merchants decreased to about 43 FL/turn...Any explanation, dear all?

I have never noticed sudden shift in predicted commodity prices (in MTW2).

I play for England , not sure about the difficulty level, probably medium/medium - my first campaign of MTW2.

Thank you for suggestions.

If you haven't patched your game at all, that's the reason. Patch ASAP, in the meantime always remember to switch your capital city to some other town, then back, to reset the "distance from capital" factor for all ressources.

If you *have* patched the game... well I dunno. Maybe the new merchant is just lining his own pockets ? :laugh4:

Oooh, and if you put both new merchants on the same ressource, that would explain it as well : they both get half the ressource's worth, so as to stop players from, say, putting 20 merchs on the best ressource. Them players are a weasely bunch, I tell ya.

As HRE I always stop four merchants in the Constantinople region for silk trade and one in zagreb for gold. Turns a nice profit. I believe that a 10 skill merchant generates slightly over 700 florins for silk from Constantinople back to Germany.

Tschüß!
