Currently I have priests in about every settlement I have but the heresy levels and other religious levels are going up. How do I stop this, short of more churches? Is there a way to "force" them out of my settlement and than use my priest to kill them? Because right now no matter how many priests I have in the settlement, heresy levels/Orthodox are at 40% and going up.

I don't think your heresy or other religion levels should go up if you have priests/churches present in your provinces unless heretics/other religion priests are in your province. You can kill heretics with your priests. You can kill other priests with assassins.

Also I think cardinals are more powerful than priests in increasing your proper religion. So you may consider using cardinals as a fire brigade in any province you are having religion problems.

Ok I guess my question is, how do I force the heretics out of my city? Or is there a button I can press to make my priest kill all the heretics inside the city or convert them, like when you click on a heretic walking around you get a percentage of likelihood to convict them. Occasionally I'll see heretics leaving my city, is this because they've been kicked out and are no longer in my city or does this happen when the heretic levels get really high and they just start spreading?

Here is some visual evidence of whats going on in just one of my settlements. Unfortunately this is the one with my cardinal and he can't even make them disappear...

Well are there heretics in your provinces? What is the piety like of your faction leader? Are you ex-communicated?

No heretics walking around, piety is pretty crappy I think and at the time I was ex-communicated.

It might be a bug. Only way to be sure is to press ` and then type toggle_fow and allow yourself to see the entire map without any fog of war. Then scan your provinces again to be sure there arent any heretic priests wandering about.

That would do it Werner.

If you weren't excommunicated then there would be a problem. As you were then it makes sense.

My question still stands, is there a way to force heretics out of provinces and then squash them with a priest? And what forces them out, is it high amounts of herecy or high amounts of piety (i.e a cardinal, high priest).

I dont think you can. The best thing you can do is build more churches, build more priests (multiple priests in each city will help), and try to get back on good terms with the pope ASAP.

I don't have a clue as far as game mechanics are concerned, but logic-wise, if you're excommunicated, your priests become nothing but latin-spewing people who dress in a weird way.

They should have absolutely no spiritual authority because the Pope, who is God's spokesman on Earth, has declared that your faction (and its priests) is outside of God's realm, that they will find the gates of Heaven barred when they die, will not be able to cannibalize Christ every sunday anymore and, basically, has just declared that they are unfit to be christians. It's only logical that your death-fearing folk turns to other paths to salvation, isn't it ?

That said, I believe that there are some provinces with a built-in pagan/heretic/muslim/catholic factor, either permanently or through periods, according to history. For instance, it's been my impression that southern France spawns much, much more heresy than other French provinces. Could be a quirk of my campaign, could be hardcoded historical data (what with southern France being the home of Catharism).
