As this unit is available in the custom battle section of the game for the English faction can i assume it's a bug that it is not present in the grand campaign?
I'am making that assumption only on the fact that Englands two spear based units are available from the beginning of the game.As an infantry biased faction i would imagine it would be in there?
I have seen this mentioned in the TWc forums in the bug section but i have yet to see it confirmed.
Apologies if this has been mentioned before but i only have the net at work and dont get much time to browse though many posts. Thanks in advance for any replies.
Oh BTW...... Hello to everyone on the forums,i'am a long time lurker who has just decided to register.Oh and awesome game btw......Great job CA.
Yes, this has been discussed before. I don't think it is a bug - rather a device to keep diversity in the SP game (the unit is in MP, presumably for balance). Let's keep such discussion in this thread, on MP units that are not in SP:

My advice would be to recruit mercenary spears and to treasure Crusader sergeants - in stats, both are the armoured spears we Englishmen apparently never had.

Econ is English?
Maybe the Council of Nobles can give them to you as rewards.
These could be like the Eagle-carrying Legions in RTW.
Just an opinion, I haven't actually played the game yet, though.

Thanks for the replies you two.
If it's a design feature then i have no problem with it other than that our best spear unit is available straight away.
To be honest though with decent armour i have found them reliable against all the cavalry i have currently encountered.
Maybe i'm just a glutton for different looking units later in the game :clown:

Also i noticed Venice cant build Dismounted Broken Lances although the mounted versions are ok. Hmm i smell a mod coming up next month. Anyone have a list with all the missing units. I heard things from england, france, venice, turks and russians so far.

What are the Rus missing?

I take Econ's point about unit diversity but to be honest if you take the English,French,German,Spanish and Italian state factions as an example then they are all pretty varied as it is.
I suppose it all comes down to vanity with me,my beautiful medieval army mucked up by having a load of scruffy looking blokes with woolly hats on the flanks........I would have left them out of the army photograph thats for sure :beam:
I can understand the balancing aspect for multiplayer but i'd love a mod to include some of the units that are missing for single player as long as they fit in with the factions own unit roster and were balanced.

In my English campaign lack of 'decent' spear units hasn't really affected my performance. I tend to use Armoured Swordsmen as my main center of the line troops and have 1 levy spears at each end of the line with either billmen or dismounted english knights slightly behind on the flanks.
This has been fine for most of the fights, about 1 in every 2 battles involves me fighting an entire army of missle/artillery units with a well balanced conquering army though.
