Is it possible to retrain those special mercenary units that are possible to recruit during the crusade?
Well will they even stay in my army after the crusade ends?

1) I don't know, but combining depleted units and hiring more helps.
2) Yes

I've found it possible to retrain the Unhorsed Knights who have been hired for the crusade but not others, I've not had much joy in recruiting Crusader Seargents or Crusader Knights in some of my later crusades.
Honestly, they're so inexpensive to hire, if you could retrain them it would be a little unbalanced. Just be happy you can hire super cheap effective units and cheerfully send them off to their doom.

You know I am not sure... Iwould say no because they are a mercenary unit...
But, I can retrain the Unhorsed Knight mercenary units back up to full strength in one of my middle east fortresses....
yeah but why keep them they have a really high upkeep cost.
i am pretty sure that i could retrain some of them, sargeants and possibly dismountd knighs or w/e they are called.

For one they look fancy:laugh4: Plus I'm playing Poland which has rather mediocre infantry. So for example those Unhorsed knights would be a nice addition to my army.
On another note, my Polish crusading army that just entered the Holy Land on it's way to liberate Jerusalem look pretty strange. Some 3/4 of it consists of various mercenaries hired on Eastern European plains: Slav mercenaries, Bulgarian brigands, Cuman horse archers and Alan light cavalry. Geez, these guys shouldn't even be catholics, even less so zealous enough to go on Crusade.

After liberating Jerusalem I can now confirm that Unhorsed knights can indeed be retrained. And not only in the castle but also in the city (at least in Jerusalem).

You can retrain all mercs as long as its possible to buy the same kind of merc in the region youre in, oh and there needs to be some available otherwise you cant retrain you will need to wait like when training your normal units.
From the looks of it you can retrain any merc unit when your settlment has a pool of the same type.

I'll have to try that out, I have a great cross in Antioch with 10 soldiers or less, looks like I'll have to FedEx it back to Rome :laugh4:

Cities would be pretty useless for some factions if you couldn't retrain mercs. Thank god for mercenary spearmen.
I haven't had any experience with crusades yet, but jihad units seem to make good garrison units, despite their terrible defence I find they kill all comers when defending walls. If you need more of them just call another jihad. Wonderful.
i wa able to recruit an unhorsed knight crusader merc near antioch when not actually on a crusade - this may be related to the fact that they are retrainable
it was the crusader price as well -220 or something

I'm able to retrain unhorsed knights in Jerusalem despite the fact that there aren't other units of that type available for hire at the moment.
