View Full Version : Charge/mass values

I read in the official .org RTW bugs thread that charge values are almost meaningless in a charge, what matters is armour and attack. I had already noticed this into some extent, but I thought it was just me. What do you think of it? I read quite some posts saying some mods make the mistake of thinking charge values really matter, is the EB team aware of this?
About unit mass, I think all it does is throwing the enemies to the air in the charge and pushing them to hell during melees, is this confirmed? What is the real use of mass, holding/breaking a phalanx seems probable...

That's a bug in RTW 1.2. It is fixed in RTW 1.5, so it won't effect EB 0.8.
Yes, we are/were aware of this, and thankfully no longer have to compensate for it in 1.5.

Well, all I can say is I'm glad such problem is no longer in EB's path.

Currently messing a bit with this. The mass value effects how soldiers push into enemy formations. I think it effects charging because cavalry have a high mass, therefore push into infantry, therefore the second and third rank soldiers have a chance of attacking with their charge bonus and not just the first rank.
Infantry with a mass higher than 1 seems to be a bad idea so far as they get out of formation without getting the benefit of the cavalry level charge bonus. Testing it to see if giving galatians higher than 1 means they push into phalanxes to simulate the way they were supposed to roll under the pikes of phalanx units.

The mass is the reason that guys fly through the air all the time, no? I have seen some mods that will have guys fly into the air when just standing still and fighting other infantry, is this due to funky mass values? (Though this is also seen often with the buggy BI 'shieldwall' formation.)

For cavalry, there are actually two mass values. There's the one in EDU which affects the 'solidness' of a unit, both in its charge and when receiving a charge - a low mass in this case would result in strange behaviour with models 'bouncing' off other models and so on. Then there's also mount mass in descr_mount.txt, which in 1.2 was one of the main factors in affecting a cavalry charge (instead of the charge bonus, which didn't really work).
So with cavalry charges in 1.5, there are two main things you have to keep in mind; the mount's mass value, and the unit's charge value. Both directly affect the attack strength of a cavalry unit while charging.
I'm guessing you may have already known this, just clarifying it for those who don't ;)
