View Full Version : Which hairstyle should I choose?

For the past 3 years I've been growing my hair, and it's now almost waist length. Although it has been fun, and I don't regret doing it, I am starting to tire of it now, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have it cut. I thought I would solicit advice from the patrons here about what I should have done.
I've been considering a classic men's haircut with a side parting, as sported by Errol Flynn in this picture-
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/enervatedband/flynngalry.jpg
Alternatively, I could keep it slightly longer. I was watching The Princess Bride yesterday, and was quite taken with Cary Elwes' haircut-
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/enervatedband/CaryElwes.jpg
Or I could go for a central parting instead, again with the hair left slightly longer-
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/enervatedband/jv_9s.jpg
What do you think?
Before I decide: could I have a picture of you so I can see which hair style would suit you the best.
Otherwise I would recommend the last one or a buzz cut :laugh4:.

#3 will suit very well if you have such a cornered face.

What's wrong with my hair colour?!
Number 3 is definitely the younger man's cut. However, I do really like those classic 50s hairstyles. It's tricky.
My woman thinks you're Teh Bomb! I'll ask her opinion when she gets home.
She'll let you know.

Just a thought, #1 & 2 will probably require more hair goo of some kind.
When I cut my long hair I gave it to “locks for love”.
If you go for either #1 or #2, don't forget to grow the stylish moustache that Errol and Cary are sporting! Any other hairstyles from Robin Hood actors that you are considering?
You're all wimps! BKS, keep the hair, grow a beard.
Alright BKS,
Mrs. Beirut says:
First off, you don't have to cut it that short.
Second, your hair is too straight to pull of the Errol Flynn wave.
Third, if you cut it that short your hair will have no body.
Fourth, of the three shots, go with the third style
My ten year-old says "Ugh!" in reference to Errol Flynn. She's ten, whadaya expect.

Heh, thanks Beirut. Tell your family thanks as well.
I'de go with #3. With your straight hair. God do I wish I had straight hair.

I go with Sasaki on this! Mohawk it! I suggest the Psychobilly Mohawk: Bigger in the front than it is in the back, and other than that, it is a mohawk.
I actually did sport this cut^ for a long time, the wife says she like my hair so I grew it out.
Csar, why wish for straight hair? I have a lot of curly hair and the wife loves it.
Russian army style baby. Nah, saw your pic, long hair looks good on you. Keep it.

#2 for your face. Maybe 3#, depends.

P.S. Oh, and uh, Mrs. Beirut is right about the Flynn 'cut. ~;)
Get a decent haircut (read: no longer then 2 cm) and a decent job, you lazy hippy :whip:
:laugh4: I think the third one will suit you best, but combine it with a stubbly beard, the ladies will love it (and you don't have to shave everyday~;) ).

From the 3 samples you presented, it looks like you're considering a "medium" (i.e. collar-length) style. I agree, I think that's best because it gives you more flexibility than long (which is just, well, long... unless you braid it or something decorative), or short, which limits your choices to "part or no-part?", and "left or right?", and colour.
You have an oval-shaped face that is growing into a square shape. 10 years from now, people will describe your face as "chisled" (a good thing). Your currently long hair is so heavy that it can be nothing but straight. It'll be interesting to see if it develops more "body" when you cut it back to collar-length. If not, there's always "product" to give it more life.
I've always been a fan of the 'pulled back, off the face, windswept' look, similar to this guy (http://mensfashion.about.com/od/goominghair/ss/MediumHair2.htm). My women have also. Low maintenance, run your fingers through it in the morning; supports facial hair, or not; puts your face out there in the world, unafraid.
Forget the "part", that's for followers; you're a leader. You have sensitive eyes; people see that right away, no need to reinforce your sensitivity with a 'sensitive' hairstyle. Windswept, outdoors guy, busy man making important decisions... that's the ticket.
Wow, I kinda got swept away there :laugh4: I don't usually give hairstyles and looks more than a passing thought. Thanks for the chance to explore that side. :)

Big King Sanctaphrax
11-28-2006, 19:03
I probably would have had to a few years ago, but if they tried to make me do it now I'd just be able to slap a big sexual discrimination suit on them. My local trust's rules just say I have to tie it back.
I'm definitely going to have cut it by the time I start seeing patients, though. People do make assumptions about you based on something like that.
Dreadlocks all the way...
sideways mohawk. One going from ear to ear. I have never seen anyone with it before and am curious to see someone with it. But don't make a normal mohawk with it to make a cross or something or birds will think it is a target and poop on you. Wouldn't want that now would we?

Wow, Kukri. A new career beckons there, I think-those Queer Eye guys won't know what hit them.
Those guys on that show are so conventional - they decorate and accessorize, that's about it, IMO. Their clients are asking them to remake them into different men, because what they have, and what they've been doing, hasn't worked so far - at least that's the premise of the show. I think the queer-eye guys mostly fail in that mission.
Reenk Roink: Sigged.
I feel so honoured - or is it cursed? :laugh4: MammaKukri always said: "Don' say nuttin' wot ya don' wanna read in tomorrow's headlines."
So, Honorable Big King Sanctaphrax, you thinking of making this huge change with the new year? Then you could always blame it on: "I was soooo drunk...", if things went badly.

Well, some girls from the Vidal Sassoon hairdressing school stopped me in Oxford street a few weeks ago and asked me if I'd do some modelling for a project they're doing. They were pretty hot, so of course I said yes. I figure I'll do that for them, and then ask them to recompense me for my time in trade.

Think carefully before you cut off your hair. I cut mine off when I was about 19 (I'd had long hair since I was 16) and regretted it ever since. You can have short crew cuts for the rest of your life, but you can only carry off the long hair thing while you've still got your youth (and your hair). I couldn't go back to long hair again now. Growing it is the worst part. Your hair has to go through about a year and a half of looking horrible. You get all the stupid comments, and it can be a pain to wash every morning. Once it's off there's no going back, at least not for a long time.

- Rage Against The Machine (in 3the or 4th when they released their first one)

People who identify with a certain musical style oftne have a certain hairstyle.
long greasy=metal
bald=metal, or gabberhouse, or some other niche genre (usually)
middle long clean=rock
middle long greasy=grunge
etc....
Not always true, and might depend on the area, but hairstyle syays a lot about your musical taste if you're still in your teens. At least it did so when I was young(er).

The cut looks good, BKS. My question is: how are the ladies taking it? I wore my hair very long from 1990 - 1998, ala Robert Plant. I finally got tired of folks not knowing my name and referring to me as "the guy with the hair," and cut it short. For several months I had unknown women asking "why? Why?!"
I've since thought about growing it back, but I don't relish the thought of taking 15 minutes to give it a proper washing, of having to find an expensive stylist to keep it looking cool, and tying it back like Steven Segal much of the time, as suits and shaggie hair aren't so fashionable these days.
I donated my shorn locks to a similar cause at the recommendation of my hairstylist. He handled it for me.

11 year old haircuts?
Nice haircut! Now you have an opportunity to make such a hairstyle as you posted on the first three pictures, you just need a good hair gel for it. Applying it on hair allows forming locks and holding it together just make sure that the product can be combined with your hair type. Here is the manual (https://mystraightener.com/best-hair-gel-for-men-how-to-get-the-strongest-hold-and-ultimate-shine/) on how to choose the right hair gel, hope it will come in handy.
