Bruges?

I know where Antwerp and Metz are, but is Brudges supposed to be Brussels? If so, shouldn't it be south of Antwerp and also land locked?


Also, any bandits that appear in this territory get a unit called "Flemish Pikemen." Now that I've conquered Brudges and Antwerp, can I now build them? If so, how?

Wouldn't it be more like... Bruges? Wiki: Bruges (Dutch: Brugge (a name probably signifying landing stage)) is the historic capital of the province of West Flanders, Flanders being one of the three regions of Belgium. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in Europe. And it's most certainly where it's supposed to be.

You can't build them, but if I'm reading the mercenaries file right they should show up as mercenaries in the area after the year 1300.

Was it in RTW that if you took, say Wales you could build Welsh bowmen??

Not sure about M2 though, was just about to pillage Wales as France for that very same reason!!

Bruges was called the Venice of the North. In medieval time, it was a florishing, rich city, one of the pearls on the French crown, allthough hard to control. The inhabitants didn't like being ruled by the French King.

The city played an important role in the events leading to the Battle of the Golden Spurs (July 11, 1302), won by the Flemish. Allthough we still celebrate this victory, it was actually only one battle in a bloody conflict, finally lost by the rebellious Flemings (Flemish?).

It is nowadays 'Brugge' in Belgium (Flanders). A respectfull city in it's own accord, but much older and bigger then than Brussels (if that was even more than a hamlet back then). Brugge was back then probably the most influentual city in the region, only later surpassed by Antwerp, and that was surpassed by Amsterdam in the eighty years war between the Dutch United Provinces and the Spanish: Phillip II, son of Charles the Vth, inhereted the low countries and Spain. The Dutch emerged from this struggle, finally fighting free of the Spanish oppression. Flanders was for the most part still SPanish occupied after this. Flanders, (Brugge and Antwerp) never reclaimed it's status again as the most wealthy part in the region, from that moment on, Holland was the economical powerhouse of the region, for some time even of the whole of Europe.

No, it is Brugge in Dutch, Bruges in Frensch and English or Brügge in German. It is in the right place.
Brussels, as you are right, is more to the south of Antwerp. All three cities are on the flemish territory (although Brussels is nowadays one of the three federal regions in Belgium), that is why you can get these pikemen.
But I guess you can only recruit them if you are Frensh. I could not with HRE, the Danish nor the English.

and i meant MTW1 in above post not RTW - im sure you could build each countrys own units in the provinces you had captured, i remember building welsh bowmen as egyptians!!!

To be noted, a tidal wave in 1134 opened a canal between the city and the north sea, allowing trade to massively develop. This "canal" will slowly resorb a the end of the 15th century, which is the reason why Antwerp became the dominant flamish port, even though not being directly on the sea.

BTW as the French I could not recruit flamish pikemen (nor Swiss guards in Bern).

It is Bruges. I actually visited the city last summer when I went to Belgium. Nice medieval architecture. It was also right by a beach and appears on the coastline in the game, so I'm pretty sure that's the city.

LOL... ok... I spelled it wrong. I was going off of memory since I'm here at work (avoiding work). Thanks for all the info. I had never heard of the city before, and I seem to remember the region being called Flanders in MTW. So I was just curious (like back in college...).


I'm playing as French, so I was kind of hoping I could build those pikemen. I find it slightly annoying that the BANDITS can get the pikemen, but I can't. I suspect that even if I buy them out (which I haven't been able to accomplish yet), I still woudn't get them. It's only 1090 in my campaign right now, and I have the time set to 0.5, so I won't get to 1300 for something like 400 turns (!).

I guess it's something that someone with a mod will fix. If I can't build the units, neither should the bandits! Harrumph! :furious3:

They are mercs. Who's pool only starts being fille either in 1300 or 1400. IIRC it's 1300.
