fought a battle vs some rebels the other day with a general that was 'deranged' Imagine my suprise when he started mumbling through the pre battle speech interspersed with talk of rations being too small and peas and 'O no this is going to be bad isn't it'! It was like something out of monty python.
I am seriously considering deliberately creating a royal family that consists of loonies and wierdos simply for the pre battle speeches! Anyone know what triggers deranged and are there any other fun traits that can be used to generate inane pre battle speeches.

I found that marrying your princesses to their brothers and cousins shallows the gene pool immensely

You mean this little bit of speech:
"And so to battle. Oh dear. This isn't going to be very pleasant is it? Still, could be worse. At least the weather's not too bad, for the time of year. No. But hasn't the food been shocking - and the portions so small - all except the peas. They were very green. Very green. Yes. I do hope you tried them and gave peas a chance. "
And no, the inspiration in that case wasn't Monty Python, but a strange linkage of influences from Woody Allen to protest folk songs, a glove puppet version of former UK PM John Major, and the "living national treasure" that is playwright Alan Bennett. :laugh4: And all that in under 100 words! All brought to you courtesy of the Boring Speaker trait.

I am really enjoying the pre battle speeches, they are much better than the ones in Rome, even better than the speeches given by my 83 year old senile 9 star Consular general who was very vulgar in the mouth....
'You are probably wondering why i've called you here, i was wondering that myself.. Oh yes, we're here to kill all those bar stewards over there, i want to bathe in their blood, i want to bathe in their blood for a week, now kill them All!!'
maybe the secret to longevity is bathing in blood, he was still going strong at 90....

Lol, I'll have to start listening to them then.
I've been skipping them so far as they are so quiet and spoken with such a monotonous tone that the bodyguard on the right of the general appears to be nodding off.

I didn't know there was a "secret admirer of Countess Báthory" trait! Wonderful! Has your general been hanging out in Slovakia recently?

Wohoo! I've always wanted a Monty Python game!
The speech reminds me of "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"
That was a good one, the Boring Speaker... is it in the same line as the Bad Speaker? Cause that was a suberbly 'bad' speech I got from that general.
It was so lousy and filled with 'uhm's and pauses that I couldn't contain my laughs. Though the best still has to be the Social Drinker speech for the HRE (I don't know if it is there for the others as well).
I still laugh when I think of it.:laugh4:
This calls for a question: are speeches moddable??
By speeches I mean both the voices, and the triggers that make them possible. ie, can I record a speech and link it to a trait/faction?
That bit was hilarious, but there's still more fun to be had along those lines.

Moddable? It depends, but I doubt you can change all of it. Other than designing the original RTW system and providing the text, I have no idea how the coder actually implemented the detail - I'm quite a trusting soul, really.
The speeches are actually built on the fly before each battle by selecting from a range of elements - this needed quite careful "construction work" in the text to make sure that there was a flow to what the general was saying and not too many jarring discontinuities.
The speech element triggers are tied to the state of both armies, the size of the battle (unit count), the terrain, the strategic situation, the general's traits and so forth. As far as I know the triggers and selection routine isn't driven by a "public" data file. The system is much the same as the one done for RTW, but with quite significant functional tweaks.
However, you should be able to record new speeches and give them the same names as the existing .mp3s. Of course, you'd end up with a slightly comedic effect as the voice changes between speech chunks, so you'd have to do the whole thing to make the mod seamless. Lots of work, that. Lots. And besides, I think the actors did a rather good job on M2TW.
Now we just need a few cynical, self-aware generals talking about how they're going to get stuck on a cliff in mountainous maps and ordering their men to jump off and create a ramp down to spice things up :D
