I was looking at the descr_regions file and made a few discoveries.

1. Swordsmith guilds are buildable in ONLY Toledo and Damascus.

2. Woodsmen's guilds ONLY in York, Nottingham, London and Caen.

3. Explorer's guilds only in Western European Atlantic provinces.

4. Knights of Santiago and Teutonic coded only for certain provinces.

5. Many cities coded for crusade or jihad like Constatntinople.

6. Five cities coded as "horde targets": Jerusalem, Antioch, Constantinople, Kiev and Smolensk.

That's what it looks like, but it is incorrect. In my Byzantium game, I had swordsmith guilds in Bran and Caesarea, and the world HQ in Ragusa. In my current Spanish game I have one in Toledo and one in Acre. Only Toledo is mentioned in the files. Those provinces might be more likely to develop them, though, a preference if you will. Toledo steel and Damascus steel were historically renowned through the middle ages.

That is strange.
In Edinburgh I am offered a Theolgogians Guild always and in Caen I am offered a Swordsmith Guild. In York I am offered Theologian, Explorer and Merchant Guilds but I have declined all three.
I wonder what the explanation is?

I've been offered multiple explorer's guilds as the Egyptians, everywhere from Constantinople to Dongola. I have a master explorer's guild in Baghdad, currently. I also have a swordsmith's guild in Caesarea.

Quillan might be right that it increases the PROBABILITY of those Guilds and Orders. Maybe it test for them more frequently or allows an HQ?

The "Jihad", "Crusade" and "Horde_Target" tags do seem to have an effect on the AI.

The "Atlantic" tag and the various numbers are still cryptic to me though...

The locations given are for some historical basis. Like the steel of Toledo and Damascus for instance. But that doesn't mean other places couldn't have done similarly...

What it does mean is that these places have an inbuilt system to make these guils pop up either as soon as the recruirements are met or something close to that.

I could see lots of sense in those regions having a higher probability of having said guilds. Spain, for instance, produced some of the best swords of the era. Typically, modern german provinces would also have a higher chance of having a teutonic guild offered.

I think it is likely that the code promotes a greater likelihood of a guild being offered; it just doesn't restrict the guild to those locations.

On the subject of horde targets, I'm not altogether happy with the result of that code in the game. It is entirely possible to get lucky, as the Russians, and have the horde invade Mesopotamia instead and ignore the steppes altogether. The result doesn't satisfy my historical accuracy tendencies.

The fact that the horde targets Smolensk and Kiev is a real polonium enema for the Russkies (and the Poles?)

For the swordsmith guild, my guess would be that the hidden resource makes it available as soon as these places reach the "large castle" level. The guild can also becomes available in all castles as far as I know, when you build enough swordsmen there (I had it after about 10-12 units built).

Other possibility is as mentioned above, it makes the guild more likely. I've never played whatever factions own damascus or toledo in the early game, so does anyone have any feedback?

Third possibility is it does nothing at all.

I've played games as spain/portuguese and the moors and i can cofirm that in every single one of those games i was offered a swordsmith's guild in toledo pretty early. I've also had swordsmith guilds in cities that weren't toledo though.

I was looking at the descr_regions file and made a few discoveries.

1. Swordsmith guilds are buildable in ONLY Toledo and Damascus.

2. Woodsmen's guilds ONLY in York, Nottingham, London and Caen.

3. Explorer's guilds only in Western European Atlantic provinces.




Every time i complete a crusade to a location thats not in Europe i get offered an Explorers guild there.

The list may just be a starting point where if there have been no offers then these get offered first. Or it may be what the AI can get if they are factions in those areas?

However I have had a Woodsmans Guild HQ in Bordeux, Swordsmiths in Metz/Hamburg/many others

Explorers guilds in Rhiems/Angers/Antioch. Not all costal provinces either.
