I love maps! There are some great ones to be found here. (http://www.sasi.group.shef.ac.uk/worldmapper/display.php?selected=169) :beam:

True size of land mass, without Russia and Canada being blown up out of proportion as usual:

Total population:

The real map of the world. By GDP:

Lovely Maps. Europe dominates tourism income. No wonder there are no tall business buildings in the centers of their capitals. People want to see old europe.

It is interesting to see China from the perspective of those maps, especially in the categories of economic growth.

Thanks for posting that link Louis! :2thumbsup:

Yes, I love maps too - I can happily sit down and "read" an atlas, especially if it has some special focus. I find Japan quite interesting on this series...

Thanks Louis :2thumbsup:

Canada rocks, such an rediculous amount of space for such a small population........ I find it amazing that Holland has a bigger population then Canada and Australia combined, kinda crowded here :dizzy2:

Seems like France is the heart of european tourism, not surprising since Paris is absolutily awesome.

2 more weeks, Paris here I come

The Netherlands are terribly overcrowded.

BTW, check out this one, Refined Petroleum Exports:

I think Lemur posted a thread like this a couple of months ago...Maybe he did indeed. I do have a vague feeling that I've seen this site before...

Does anybody else have any other maps or sites to share?

That is just mean Louis, not that happy with the dutch 'supporters' right now. I was in Paris with the student riots though, and guess what, I go to Copenhagen and what happens? Student riots!

Next time the dutch go berserk, I can think of a certain cop that's perfect for dealing with them.

I have one I can lay my hands too.

Blakanized North America
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/misc/balkanus.gif

What is the most fragmented that North America could have been? There are several plausible scenarios (some based on different patterns of settlement from Europe, others on different fracture lines) but I chose 1787 as the point of divergence from real history. In this alternate reality, the westward expansion of the Anglo-American people proceeded pretty much as it did in our reality, but the United States government just couldn't keep up. Every national identity crisis resolved itself in favor of the separatists instead.

Although this is an extremely unlikely scenario to begin with, I didn't want to just randomly subdivide the continent. I looked for regions which either ...

1.administered themselves as autonomous nations at some point in American history, or ...
2.shed blood to achieve or maintain their independence, or at least ...
3.threatened to.

Of course, the Native American tribes throughout the continent fit all these criteria, but I limited myself to only three native enclaves.

Blue democratic (more or less)
Brown authoritarian (more or less)
Purple box with a black crown is a monarchy
Aqua box with half circles is republic
Same colours as republic with the shapes of a monarchy is a vacant throne.

Minor point about the animated gif, but the Republic of Ireland did not become a monarchy in 1923.

Interesting stuff, nonetheless.

Since I am prohibited from linking to the image directly, here is a page displaying a map of Europe and Eurasia around the year 900.

This site's pretty solid for maps all around, but I find this one fascinating.

Random sillyness only distantly related to the topic of this thread but too funny to pass:

MSN Maps: "Quickest Route" across Norway takes in Newcastle, London, Channel Tunnel, Germany...

Comment: Don't you just love computerised directions... from the same page:
23: Merge onto A1(M)

24: Road name changes to A1

25: At Exit 49, road name changes to A1(M) [Leeming Lane]

26: Road name changes to A1 towards A1 / The South / Wetherby

27: Road name changes to A1(M)

28: Road name changes to A1

29: Road name changes to A1(M)

30: At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A1 towards A1

31: At roundabout, take the FIRST exit onto A1 [Worksop Road]

32: At roundabout, take the THIRD exit onto A1

33: At roundabout, take the SECOND exit onto A1 [Great North Road]

34: Stay on A1

35: At Exit 17, road name changes to A1(M)

I especially like no 30. However, 34 would have done for all of it!

This is really great stuff.

The one thing these maps show more than anything is the gross inequalities that exist in the world. It's a rather graphic example that instead of trying to kill and dominate one another we should be attempting to bring the world and all its ethnicities closer together to responsibly share the resources available for the betterment of humankind.

Wait..... And if we stopped fighting there would be no war!!! Why did I never think of that?

I don't know. Perhaps because you enjoy watching grainy images of bombs flying into "terrorist's" bedroom windows? Or maybe, deep down, seeing a bunch of people you despise set something on fire to the outrage of your peers kind of excites you? Who's to say?

The fact is (as these maps clearly demonstrate) that we, the rich folk, live at the expense of the majority of people on this earth.

We all want to make a better world. Call me crazy, but I just happen to think that a world that is united by love, respect and equality for all its people is the best way to achieve it. :idea2:

I know this is cliché but I think the following lyrics are in order.

You might say, I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday, you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Peace

On the front of a 16th century house in Amsterdam the following words are written: 'HOMO SAPIENS NON VRINAT IM VINTUM' which means 'a wise man doesn't piss against the wind'

Only way to reach equality is accepting inequality, because men isn't equal. It would be one hell of a job for zillions of expensive organisations to try to even things up, and you end up screwing everyone over. Dreaming is ok as long as you wake up in the morning :2thumbsup:
