View Full Version : Defeat Imminent?!

Hello,

My Venetian campaign on H/H has dragged on probably a little longer than it should have. It's tough to wipe out both Milan and the Byzantines when they both expand significantly and all your neighbors declare war on you, forcing you to defend on multiple fronts.

Still, I thought I was doing OK, controlling quite a few cities including Constantinople, Nicea, Milan, and Genoa. However, around turn 109, I got a message stating:

Defeat Imminent!

It further informed me that the English have all but achieved world domination. Apparently they've almost reached their goal of controlling 15 cities and wiping out France.

I didn't know that I'd have to achieve my goal before any other faction achieved theirs. Has anyone else received this message?

Thanks.

I've never had it happen to me, but I hear it is quite common in the short campaigns.

Yeah I received the same message in my English campaign. Saying that the Spanish were close to world domination.

yEAH, I got the same message during my HRE campaign telling me that the ùSpaniards were close to world domination. This is quite frequent, especially on high difficulty levels. However it never happens in the grand campaign.

I got it playing as Spain also about the English, I am not sure about the Scotish but the French were still in play but on there last province.

Rather awkward that as England was my oldest ally and I had chosen to support them even though they had just been excommunicated and called a Crusade to take back Toulous. But then I got this message and was in a dilema. The dilema was resolved the next turn by a failed assassination attempt in Zargoza by an English assassin putting us at war.

I quickly joined the Crusade with my latest army and took back Toulous (where I learned that if you attack a settlement with two stacks in a crusade, where only one is the crusading army obviously, make the actually attack with the crusading army or when you succeed in the battle the non-crusading army takes the city and the crusade is called off!) and gave it to the French to give them I fighting chance to hold off the English while I finish off the Moors for victory. Just because things can never be simple I can't ally with the French despite a perfect relationship because they remain doggedly allied to the Moors!!

Well, my enemy's friend's enemy is also my enemy which makes my enemy's friend my friend and my potential enemy at the same time, as they say... :2thumbsup:

Has anyone actually been defeated in the short campaign because a rival reached their goals first?

I'm actually a bit puzzled. I've played a bit more and am beginning a strong Western campaign, and I just exchanged map information with the English. The French were just completely destroyed, but the English only have 12 territories. That would seem to imply they need three more for domination - not exactly what I would call "imminent." :dizzy2:

I recieved a world domination message about the Turks in turn 148, summer 1154 (I am now in turn 169, summer 1165). I posted about it and someone said that you get that message when nother faction is close to getting 15 regions. If another faction gets the victory conditions first (World domination + defeating whatever factions), you can't win. He said you can still play, but you can't win. I don't know how true it is. I am still playing the same campaign and it hasn't told me that I lost yet. I'll let you know what happens when I beat France (it will be very soon).

I think you get the "defeat imminent" message when someone else gets close to the victory goals. The idea is that you get a warning so you can still try to do something to win before they do. It could be 12 cities that prompt the warning for example, though I think short campaign still has some other req's than just the 15 provinces as well.

Seems a reasonable time to give a warning to me. 3 provinces wouldnt take very long to conquer if you set your mind to it, but it also gives you enough time to try to do something about stopping the AI from achieving it.

If they were to give you a warning just 1 turn before they achieved their victory conditions, what would be the point of that?

Ah yes, good point. I'll be focusing my campaigning in the west for now, attempting to punch through Milan (taking care of one of my goals) on my way to England in order to deny them their victory conditions.

I guess I'd better hurry...

I received the same message as the French about the Byzantines. Shortly after, the Horde appeared, and I haven't heard anything since. ~;) They also dropped out of the "Overall" top spot soon after.

I got it as the Turks. the message said Denmark was close to success. I was playing shrt campaign and was so close to wiping out the Byzantines when the Danes won. After that, the continue playing screen appeared and I just continued playing like normal. Only thing is an embarassing message in the faction screen which says Global Domination: Denmark (Victorious)
