Egypt thinks terror arrests (http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/12/04/egypt.arrest.ap/index.html) are cool too.

You know what I notice? Of the dozen+ arrested there was only one from the US but he was mentioned first. Conscious decision made by CNN?

A nice break from the usual arrests of opposition figures, brotherhood members, homosexuals, bloggers, and other dissidents.

Maybe these guys asked his highness, the most courageous Air Chief Marshal and beloved president-for-life, if he’d allow free elections within a decade.

And I suppose if they just let the akhawaan run wild then everything would be peachy, right?

If Egypt wasn't yet another damn repressive autocracy it might not breed quite so many militants, you know.

You know what I notice? Of the dozen+ arrested there was only one from the US but he was mentioned first. Conscious decision made by CNN?Yes, that's a consious decision by CNN. But they would mention the involvment of a US citizen in their headline, wouldn't they? I wouldn't make too much out of it. Compare these headlines:

American press:

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Egyptian police have arrested an American, 11 Europeans and several others from Arab countries
French press:

Neuf islamistes français expulsés d'Egypte, deux autres en garde à vue
Not surprisingly, the French headlines focus on the expulsion by Egypt of the nine French Islamists first.
Le Monde's (http://www.lemonde.fr/web/depeches/0,14-0,39-29013579@7-37,0.html?xtor=RSS-3208) take on this. In French, sorry.

I do not know what to make of this case. Are they Arab students of religion and culture, expelled by Cairo out of fear of possible subversive activities aimed at their regime? Or are they terrorists, French Arabs on their way to Iraq and/or to plotting terrorist attacks in France?

Or, worse, are the two the same - is fighting a Jihad against the West and the autocratic Arab regimes for these students the logical conclusion of their studious activities?
Worse still, wouldn't they have a point too in openly opposing that crappy Egypt regime? (And, oh dear, in opposing those that support it and keep it in place?)

It's all not that black and white...

Edit: Did I hear somebody mention Egypt and giving us a chance to finally use this cool smilie? :egypt:

Interestingly, Luis el Gordo, your logic holds up with Al-Jazeera as well.

"Egypt Announces Discovery of Cell Sending Recruits to Iraq"

"The Egyptian Interior Ministry announced today that it had become aware of a cell made up of Arabs and foreigners and Egyptians in contact with "terrorist agents" in the exterior who are recruiting individuals to send to "carry out missions in Iraq".

First off I gotta say, grammer on continental French is F-ed up. I really don't find it surprising that the French/US media focused on their citizens first.

Still the only reason we hear about this is it's terrorists rather than pro-democracy workers.
