View Full Version : STart map: CTDs at End Turn but not with -ai??

I'm having difficulty trying to identify this problem I'm having with the campaign map so I wonder if anyone had ever encountered a similar problem:

- The game CTDs whenever I end my turn (this is after the first turn) regardless of which faction I'm playing. There's not even a usual AI faction roll call, the moment I hit the End Turn button, it goes black and kicks me to desktop.
- No error message is given except the "the exe just had an error bla bla bla". Standard Windows stuff.
- The weird thing, I tried it with -ai, just to see which faction is causing the problem and there's NO problem when the AI is playing all factions. It kept on going, no CTD.

I doubt buildings is causing the problem (which if it did, it should've CTDed with -ai), especially since I stripped all of the build tree and all factions can only build the core building and walls, and nothing else. All settlements also has only these two buildings or less.

When I've seen crashes like this, the autosave has tried and failed to save the game. In my case it was bad character names that caused the problem. You might try turning off autosave and trying again. I don't know if the -ai option does autosaves or not.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Whooooo! Right on the money! I can end turn fine now, but it CTDed when I tried to save, so that's the problem right there!

Now I just have to identify which name is causing it. Any ideas on what could be considered a BAD name?

I don't think any of the names I have is wrong since I spent a long time on it and used excel sheet to make them and made sure names being reference are the same. However, I do have one possible culprit: one Roman faction has only one last name. This is done because I'll be implementing a script which would kill all of the newly emerging generals (aka. this faction will never get a new general). Basically the script will annihilate any general that has all the name in this faction's list and the one and only surname. Existing generals do not have this surname so they will not be affected. Could this be the problem?

Though my problem was a name, yours may not be. I think what I had done when I had this problem was cram the character's entire name into his first name with nothing (a carriage return) for the surname. It was OK when I made the surname a space.

I guess it were names because I spent the entire afternoon yesterday re-doing all the names (1200 names, not fun!) and checking each one for possible errors. It can save fine now and I can end turn properly. It still CTDs once in a while during the AI's turn so there's still stuff I need to figure out.

Thanks for the help!
