Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans.

https://img88.imageshack.us/img88/6582/08release1qh4.jpg

So the day has come, and even before the apocalypse!! In this version you will find 1.14 unpacked GB of almost a year of blood, sweat, tears and whipmarks. When we started porting over from 1.2 to 1.5 the EB Team had no clue that a great ordeal lay ahead. We have mentioned it many times on the public forums, but you have no idea how much of the mod had to be scrapped and rebuilt. Believe me, at one point it seemed that our only two choices were a ported EB with built in CTDs or else a permanent return to the RTW v1.2 platform. It was as dark a period as this mod has ever known. The core of the problem was that "building conditionals" - the very basis of our Government-controlled recruitment system - now caused two different kinds of CTDs. So the recruitment system and everything which supported it had to be scrapped and completely redesigned.

If there was a silver lining, it was this. While some members of the team focused on rebuilding the core, others were hard at work on new factions, descriptions, new units, resource icons, music, voice mods, graphics, you name it. Some have criticized us for taking far too long on this release, and in truth it has been a very difficult eight months. But please keep in mind that EB is entirely a non-profit, volunteer project. We don't get paid for working on this. We devote (and especially for those of us with families and girlfriends, sacrifice) time to work on this mod. It is entirely a labor of love.

This is not a bug-free release, but we have tried our best to make it so. All the worst CTDs that we know of have been eliminated, and most of the truly glaring bugs too. However, on a project this size we cannot guarantee it to be 100% bugfree. We hope and expect that you will report any bugs and especially any CTDs you come across at our forums, so we can research and fix them.

So what can you expect from v0.8? 3 voicemods for one (Latin, Celtic, Greek). Three new factions, the Lusotannan, Sab'yn & Saka-Rauka. New GUIs. 80-100 new units, and...ahh heck, you probably want to play the mod right away, so if you want a list of changes, check Teleklos Archelaou's post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=74103). We hope you will enjoy playing the mod as much as we loved working on it.

Many thanks to those in the EB team who have contributed their time and skills. Everyone on this list helped out in the development of the EB v0.8 release:

And in addition nikolai1962 gave us tremendous help in porting over to v.15 and EB 0.8 wouldn't exist without him. And also a big thanks to shifty157 & pinarius for the help they gave us with buildings and roman horse skins respectively. Many thanks to Prometheus & Res Gestae for letting us use the grass mod, city & port models. Caius Britannicus for letting us use his palms, and Dol Goldur for his help in implementing them. Bovi for helping us solve the Reinforcement CTD bug. Malrubius for doing the initial 1.5 port of traits. And although we have thanked them before, we gladly do so again - BIG thanks to Morgan Casey & Nick Wylie for composing the music for EB. Neither should we forget our beta-testing team who (apart from those betatesters who have joined the EB team) are Slartibartfast, Reenk Roink, Andronikos Kypriakos, zero1, Adler, John I Tzimisces, and Enoch.
And a last minute thanks, to Lusted, whose suggestion for the "first-battle CTD" seems to have worked nicely.
And Shigawire is whipping me as we speak...thanks to King Azzole for voicing the Celts. And on a related note its keravnos providing the Greek voices.
And we forgot Kali who made some skins for us that are in v0.8. Yeah, we forgot his name ~:( Sorry.

Installation Instructions:
Make sure you have a clean RTW 1.5 install on your computer. Double-click the EB-v08.exe file and follow the instructions given during the installation. EB 0.8 uses a -mod command, but a few files in the base/vanilla RTW build will also be altered. Theoretically it should work with other mods using the -mod command, but we recommend having a separate build for EB.

Click here (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/downloads_mod.html) to download the mod.

NOTE!! If you want to use the fully clothed (and thus not historical) versions of the Gaesatae & Tindanotae units then look for the addon here (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/downloads_patch.html). To install, simply drop the file into the root directory of your EB install (in simpler terms, the directory containing RomeTW.exe), launch the file, and click install. As a reminder, !!The historical Gaesatae & Tindanotae textures will be overwritten when you do this!!

Yes but I couldn't play the previous builds because if inability to un-patch to 1.2, so I've been waiting for this since before 0.7.4 came out :)
Didn't mean to make it sound like it had been that long between the two versions!

Wonderful news! It seems that a tremendous amount of work and hardship went into this version (and I'm sure that we the public don't know the half of it) Sincere congratulations to the EB team for managing to sucessfully negotiate a process which would doubtless have broken many other mod teams. Well done.

Oh yeah, and cheers for the mod as well. :2thumbsup:

Unless one of the EB team is planning on hosting a Bittorrent for this, I can have one up and running in a few minutes. It won't be permanent, but I can at least keep it up for a week or so to get through release.

My sincere thanks to everyone who worked on this project.

For two years, I worked on a mod project for another game (a Bethesda product) and I understand, a little bit, about how much everyone has sacrificed. In my case, the sacrifice meant that I didn't even discover Rome Total War until it has been out for years. But I also understand that:

1. You don't get paid.

2. Nothing ever works the first time.

3. Nothing ever works the second time.

4. You're girlfriend doesn't understand when you say "I'm going to work" and she later catches you playing a video game. Long conversations ensue in which you lie wildly about how much you long to spend time with her and how her thighs really aren't that big.

5. Everyone complains. Everyone. People on forums, people in the project group, people who send you annoymous e-mails, the fourteen year old kid across the street . . .

6. Nothing ever works the third time.

7. No matter how much work you put into the project, it'll never be enough. You may be a 3DMax genius, having created human models with competely independent movement, and someone will say: "Looks choppy to me."

8. Like death and taxes, there's always the guy that knows more about history/computer/modding/gameplay than you do. And he'll e-mail you. Every day.

9. Nothing ever works the fourth time. Luckily, your addiction to beer makes it all seem like a big joke.

10. You're still not getting paid. By now, you've started lying to yourself about how you acquired marketable job skills and how somehow, someday, you'll get be part of your own real computer game team. Then you serioiusly consider this experience and take the first job you can get at the post office.

Seriously, anyone who contributes to project like this deservese our sincere gratitude.

Thank you for putting the time and effort in to making this game so enjoyable.

I'm... afraid.... so afraid... It's downloading but, I don't know if I can start it up. I'm coming down to the homestretch at uni, finals coming up, exams left and right, papers up and down... and now EB has fallen upon me. I do think Khelvan is the devil. I think the whole EB team is evil. EEV-EL! I'm going to try and resist, at least wait a while until some minor hotfixes and patches come up... hopefully that'll give me enough of a reason to stay away for a while... hopefully... otherwsie, all is lost, hard work throughout the sememster, ruined in the blink of an eye. It's not right, it's just not right...

Oh and the image on top of the page is beautiful. Kudos to the artist :2thumbsup: .

Yeah. Thanks for offering to help, but our servermaster (the guy who runs our servers) came online and made a torrent. Its seeding at 300 kb/s to me alone.

To others:
So if you can use BitTorrent, consider using that, which means we can be a bit more safe with bandwidth

I, uh, need to ask. I've lost my old RTW CDs, I have 0.7.4 installed on 1.2. Is there some way to get the 0.7.4 uninstalled, 1.5 installed, then 0.8, without uninstalling the whole game? Because if that's necessary it is a death sentence for me since all the shops now only sell RTW gold....

eb creates a backup data folder so you could probably copy the backup then paste it over the one eb uses so it overwrites the files, then install 1.5 and 0.8. worth a try...

if it doesnt work then rtw gold is 1.5 so theres no reason you cant use it for 0.8.

Man, I do feel for you. I ran into this same problem with a different RTW mod several months ago. I had the original RTW CD but I'd lent it out to a friend who managed to misplace it. I tried several ways to "clean" my install without removing the entire mod. I even posted queries on several groups. Nothing but problems. After staying up 'till 4:00 a.m. I decided to just buy the RTW Gold.

Naturally, my friend found the original disk a month ago and returned it to me. Oh well . . .

Before playin´EB I didn´t expect that there are so many people with profound historical knowledge, artistical skills in painting, composing -you name it- & computer skills wandering this planet...but well, I am glad I learned that there are.

And now I hope you guys feel like the Beastie Boys and say: "I want to enjoy the fruits of my labor!" :bounce: & I will too and am off on a SakaRauka pony named "EB 4 ever"....well, horsey complained about the strange name...but well....gratitude has many faces. :charge:

Hello guys...I just downloaded the 0.8 EB and I am so sad to inform u that I met some serious problems and I was wondering if u could help me...After installing it I run it.From the start menu the low third of the screen was distorted and purple .Actually in the disotorted area there were multiple visions of the start menu in a purple hazy background...Unfortunately my English are not the best so I hope u understand what I try to say..Ok I thought that this would be the problem only in the menu so I continued making my choices..To my bitter disapointment the same problem continued in the game too...The lower third was distorted with little copies of what there was going on the screen....

Do u have any idea of what may be wrong??Is it possible that the problem is that I have the RTW GOld edition???Or that I didnt restart my pc after installing EB?(I will try that now:)...
Thanx in advance

Firstly I would repost your problem on the bug forum (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=127), so we don't clog up this thread. Then we can start having a convo about it and sort out some solutions.

I have the same problem, i looked through every part in the downloads section but i can not find any link to download 0.8. only the 0.72 beta and the 0.74 upgrade in the 'patches' part. Where is this link of yours?

Ok, may i have the honor of first bugreport? maybe im too late, i dont know.

The inital "welcome screen" with "Europa barbarorum bla bla bla aliquo"
is where it goes all wrong for me.

The upper half of the screen is fine, the lower half has a very purple static, and the absolute lowest cm has a bright green static. the static is passive btw, so no dynamic. and the game hangs.

This is what the bug report forum is for, lets not clog up this thread with important stuff like this.

I have just mentioned this, of course.

Back when the first open beta was released I initially couldn't see the site either, just the old "site under construction" sign. For some reason the browser didn't load the new page until I force-refreshed it by pressing F5. Perhaps they are experiencing something similar?

Unfortunately my PC doesnt seem to like the graphics settings, and the lag was hideous, but I will tweak that when I get a moment. Otherwise I'll probably have to buy a new PC, as theres no way Im not playing this superb piece of craftsmanship:bow:

Now I have to resist the temptation to start playing properly before the holidays... Only a week to go, but if I cant resist, then my lessons are going to be very shoddy next week...:skull:

Considering there have been no problems with downloads and that it's so big people aren't likely downloading multiple copies, I'd think it's a pretty accurate number. Some faulty starts may have occurred though. Anyway, those are just the ones we've tracked. Some have been uploaded elsewhere where we aren't tracking them.

Oh yeah. I playing M2 since it came out and honestly didn't think I could go back to RTW....... even for EB I thought. Then it came out and of course I couldn't resist, at least to try it. Once I started up my Carthage campaign, it was all over. I haven't touched M2 since, left a good campaign there where it stood. Now I await .81 to start a new campaign. Thanks QK. The team members have various goals - some want it primarily for themselves to enjoy, some want to make a kick ass mod for the community, some want to make a very educational mod to get people interested in learning more, or a combination of those goals. Whatever the reasons, it's always nice to hear that people are really enjoying it though.

Thanks for the quick reply. For me, as I am interested in ancient history, the high amount of accurate informations from the different cultures, which are embedded in the game, make the difference. Also a friendly kind of humor seems to be hidden inside. Though the gameplay kicks ass anyway.

Thx. for the mention - glad to help. I've downloaded your mod (about the 3rd mod I have *ever* downloaded) and may even install it if I get time. I notice you have quite a few folders outside of the modfolder - could not some of these be brought inside of it and the relevant adjustments made? I've worked on BI too long to remember (or even know) how RTW works in this regard but, for example, could you not place the TGAs in the data\terrain\aerial_map\GROUND_TYPES folder into a eb\data\terrain\aerial_map\GROUND_TYPES folder and then in your descr_aerial_map_ground_types.txt file repath it from (example line):

hills eb_TEXTURE1_HILLY.TGA eb_TEMPERATE_HILLS_WINTER.TGA

to

hills ../../../../eb/data/terrain/aerial_map/ground_types/eb_TEXTURE1_HILLY.TGA ../../../../eb/data/terrain/aerial_map/ground_types/eb_TEMPERATE_HILLS_WINTER.TGA

(I hope I got that pathing right, but adjust to fit)

Also, is the palm_layout.tga actually called up after generation? (or is it there for future generation). I've removed mine and the game does not complain.

Best & Good Luck with your new venture.

Teleklos Archelaou

I really don't know that we even have anyone on the team who knows anything much about those files now DG. Does your suggestion save space or add modability or what exactly? I feel like a big dummy for asking that, but I dont' really understand it.

The palm layout image was designed to make them more dense, but it was dropped aside during testing. We might put it back in. Haven't tried it lately as I've been pretty happy with their denseness as they are currently. Gotta love those CB palms a lot better than our earlier ones (though they were a huge step up from *not having them at all* before ).

As an aside, many thanks to DG for the Complete Guide to EDB. That was the single most useful reference in getting 0.8 out the door.

Dol Guldur
12-23-2006, 20:26
No, it does not save on space* but it makes the mod overwrite/or add less to (the latter in the case of the tgas heretofore mentioned) the vanilla data folder. In cases where files bear different names, such as your eb_x TGAs, it is highly unlikely they will be overwritten by another mod - but loading bars (for example) would be as the file name cannot be changed. It took me ages to work out that if you pack the loading bars and tile textures you do *not* have to put them in the vanilla data folder - this is using mod_0.pak in a BI modfolder. The engine will read them (though they are not read if simply placed in the folder structure!). In other words the pack is looked upon as if it were the vanilla data folder and indeed trumps it.

Nothing of the Fourth Age current build now exists anywhere but in the modfolder.

Thx. blacksnail - it was very useful for me too ;)

* well, the packed elements do actually!

I take it you are referring to the 1.5 patch for R:TW. It can be found on the official total war site (www.totalwar.com) under the section R:TW - support. If you have R:TW gold, you don't need a patch, and if you have the Barbarian invasion expansion, you should install the 1.6 patch (which includes 1.5).

Are you trying to start EB through the pop-up menu that appears when you enter the Rome CD? That doesn't work: you have to open it through the EB shortcut that is installed on your desktop and in your start menu.

The "Final" version of the v.8x series has now been released and is available for download (Note: The links in post #1 of this thread still work). The new v.81a v2 Full Install (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/downloads_mod.html) contains all the latest CTD fixes, but most fans can get the benefit of the v2 update by installing the much smaller v2 patch (https://www.europabarbarorum.com/downloads_patch.html):

List of changes:

1) Improved rebel city CTD fix (from CTD Fixes page (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=82256))
2) Script and traits typo corrections update (from CTD Fixes page)
3) Tuat Celtiberian alliance script fix (from CTD Fixes page)
4) Installer-controlled Modesty patch (button activated)
5) Improved Casse General Unit Chariot stats
6) Fixed versions of the Polybian Triarii and Sacred Band Phalanx skins
7) New Readme file and FAQ link

It also adds a "TempFixes" folder to your EB subdirectory, which contains the three temporary fix files described in the CTD Fixes thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=82256). These are included purely to save you the trouble of hunting them down, and should NOT be installed unless you experience the specific CTDs described. All three reduce game functionality and should only be used as a last resort.

It's a relatively minor "maintenance" release (the big items are the CTD fixes), and it should be 100% save game compatible. :2thumbsup: If you are playing with v.81a, you only need the patch.
