View Full Version : Uninstall problem

After making a mistake installing EB 0.8 (crashed when going to campaign map) I decided to remove my RTW install and a attempt afresh. However, uninstall kept stopping halfway through and I decided to delete the two Rome folders I had, one with EB 0.8 and one with Alexander, and remove the relevant programs (Rome and Alexander addons) using add/remove programs. Obviously this screwed things quite badly, and I'm left with an Alexander program in the add/remove list and no other files. The Alexander program won't uninstall and the RTW splashscreen after putting the CD in the drive prompts either to play or to uninstall; I can't do either and cannot install a new RTW copy.
So has anyone got any idea how on to remove the leftovers and allow me to make a fresh install? I'm not too knowledgeable in Windows, so step by step would be appreciated.

I've installed CCleaner and performed the following options:
Under "cleaner": analyze and run cleaner
Under "issues": scan for issues and fix selected issues
The Rome cd still prompts to either play or uninstall, so CCleaner appears to have had no effect.
This may or may not be practical depending on how long ago you installed EB, but do you have a system restore point you could reset your PC to? Each day system checkpoints are created so go back to the day or day before you installed EB and use the system checkpoint. It should get rid of EB and leave RTW the way it was before you installed EB.

You have to run a registry check twice.

You have to run a registry check twice.
Okay, done. It now states "No issues were found" when running the check again, but the problem still persists.

Might be an option, I only attempted to install EB 0.8 yesterday. How should I go about doing this?
Assuming you have Windows XP - Press Start, then Help and Support.
On the right hand side there should be a sentance that says "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore" Click that.
Check to make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is the selected option then click next.
On the calendar find the day you installed EB on (that should be the 9th if it was yesturday) and click on it. Now look and see what time the system checkpoint was on that day, if it was before you installed EB then click next, if not go back a day and use that system checkpoint.
If you want, read through the information on this page and then click next to restore your computer.
Hope it works

Still no luck. I've restored the friday situation, but no luck. What's worse, the restored Rome won't even start, and all folders in the Rome - Total War folder appear to be empty of files such as textures. Which is strange, because it was definitely working saturday afternoon.
Uninstall still doesn't work, not for Rome or for Alexander. Alexander it does absolutely nothing, for Rome it briefly shows a loading bar for InstallShield Wizard but then gives up.

Well, you should try manually getting rid of the folders that have anything to do with the game. A bit like Caius said, only manually. See if that reg. cleaner missed something.
Try this link, (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=43162)
If that doesn't work, it really isn't as advanced as the warning states, then report back.

Thanks to all who helped; after restoring to friday the uninstall on the splash screen still didn't work, but the setup when exploring the Rome disc did and I could uninstall. Curious. But the result is a new Rome install with EB 0.8, so I can play that when I'm home again in a few weeks!
Special thanks to Caius for CCleaner, after running the system seems to be running more smoothely.

Beat me to it. I was going to suggest either that^ or backing up the registry and searching it for everything related to RTW and removing it.
