View Full Version : Getting this for Christmas

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting this for Christmas and I was wondering if it is really good or not. I'm a big fan of MTW2 and Shogun, but for some reason I kind of dislike the map movement the way Rome and now MTW2 has it.
Are there any things I should be wary of if I get it?
What is your overall opinion of the game?
What nations can you play?
Should I even try to get this game?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Lord, topics get pushed back fast in this place:stars:
Why don't you read the stickied initial impressions thread? That should address most of your queries.
As a huge fan of Shogun and Medieval, but lukewarm on Rome, I would say go for it big style.
Best yet and should be wonderful when patched a few times. Still extremely enjoyable even in its original, shipped state. :2thumbsup:

Ditto what drucius and maestro said.
Defintely buy it. I have'nt tried Multiplayer but single player is brilliant.
Specially if you have a graphics card less then 1.5-2 years old.
well its not really playable right now, or at least not worth playing. You will want a few patches to come out first, maybe a year from now?

There are no patches out now or due to be out?
Well I disagree totally that it's unplayable. Hell I've been playing it 2 weeks straight every day, almost. If it's worth playing or not, I think it is. It will be even more worth playing once there is a patch, but right now it sure is worth playing.
The game is not only playable it is extremely enjoyable to play.
There are a lot of bugs which badly detract from the gameplay and enjoyments, BUT, it's still insane amounts of fun to play this game.
MTW took itself too seriously IMO, this game is really fun. It's fun, it's addictive (it IS bugged like all the other glorious achievements) and it's a real laugh.
It needs patching for sure. Nothing you can do about that other than wait. if it's a single player game you are after this is it. No question about it in my mind.

No patches yet. Theoretically, the major patch should appear within a week. But as others have said, it's great as it is! :2thumbsup:

No patch out yet, but one due very soon.
I was a big anti-fan about M2:TW but in a moment of utter frustration that all changed.
I was floating around a media store getting bored looking at washing machines and stuff like that. Decided to do something fun like.. trying to convince the ohhh soooooo girly girl to buy me a set of Victoria Sin (MMMMMmmmmMMMM aaahhhhHHHHHHH!) DVDs for Christmas, to absolutely no avail (it did make her jealous as hell though LOL). I finally got a wee bit tired of the whole Saturday afternoon out as a couple looking at home appliances thing... and headed to the games section, picked up M2.
I can tell you this I totally was shocked at how good it was. RTW was a big letdown, this was'nt. Guess when you don't expect anything you get more... ???
I was totally wrong about this game, and I'm hoping I'm wrong about the patch. If past performance is no judge of future performance (as they say in financial lingo) there is hope. But in all fairness I have to say that past patches for MTW were far inbetween.
Now let's see what they got in store for this baby.

Anyone know what the patch will actually contain?
If you all have any specific grievances, want to air them?
It's also notable that CA planned a day 0 patch. Now, you can say this is bad as they shipped a game they knew was bugged. Or you can look at it as a very positive step towards showing the support this game will get (and with the complexity of games, masses of code, and the competetive nature of the gaming industry these days it is practically unheard of for a game to ship bug-free).
Rome had five patches (practically unheard of in the games industry - most producers/develepors will only go to a max of 3 or 4) plus the expansion. Sega seem to be very generous with the support budget they give to CA, so the future seems bright - any major glitches or bugs will probably be ironed out in the patching/expansion process. Definetly a game that will mature well.
That only someone TouchedByTheGods would know, and possibly some of the devs at CA too, if they are on the in.
Grievances are plenty... just do a search for "bug" in Citadel.
My only grievance is with the software industry in general, I hate the release stuff fix it later story. Some legislation has to be set on this.
Anyway I think there is scope for something good here. They will patch it but when ? I don't know. The zero day patch, it's history coz zero day is history.
So not judging from history (as I know it), I'll buy into this stock.

I don't mean to be impolite or inhospitable, but every possible quibble with this game has been aired, aired loudly, echoed across the valley, re-aired, repeated and aired again. Honestly, just look at the official patch wishlist if you want to see some complaints that actually have some merit. Even then, many of those complaints are not absolutely certain to be errors. For instance, you'd think elephants were immortal from reading some threads. Javelins kill them readily.
There are no guarantees you will like this or any other game. If you get it for Christmas and don't like it, you will have to consider the possibility that Santa put you on his naughty list for being bad.
I agree with Doug-Thompson - Derfasciti, I think you need to read a bit more on this forum and then come back with any specific questions. I don't think this thread is going to be profitable.
