Do you guys have some kind of formula for working out the recruitement/maintenance costs of units or are they assigned on the fly?
I often find myself wondering why certain units are more expensive than others (e.g. Heavy Samnites costing 50% more than normal Samnites while having almost identical stats) and just wanted to know whether I am missing something.
Ik have the same problem.
Especially because the recruitment cost has a big efect on what the ai recruits. I saw that the ai recruits almost only skirmish units until now all armier consist out of skirmishers.

Qwerty and Tk-421 are the experts here, but the numbers are definitely not assigned randomly. Every weapon and item of armor has a cost, and that is factored by the materials it's made of and the number of those in the units who will need it. The spreadsheet that does all this is a wonder to behold, but even more impressive was the legwork performed by those who had to itemize all the componenets of the soldiers' "kit", and then determine the ancient era costs.
Early game the AI uses mainly light troops like skirmishers and archers. But as soon as they start to tech up you will see them using tougher men. After 20 turns or so their armies start to look more balanced.
Is there a difference what equipment the units use if they have the same stats?

Yes...It affects the cost and therefore rarity of the unit. In our campaign we show strengths and weaknesses beyond the battle map. Our MP EDU will have costs that balance units on the battle map.
