For those of you who have actually finished a long compaign in western Europe, what sort of mercenaries can I look forward to? I'm about to start a new campaign as either HRE or Spain, and if I can recruit units of mercenary musketeers I'll definitely go with HRE.

So what sort of mercs can one look forward to in Europe in the later stages of the game?

Early on, you'd have to go with merc crossbows and merc spears. Both solid units and war winners for my blitzes.

Also they don't pop-up until after a certain date and in some cases replace another. For example X-bows are replaced by pavaise X-bows after 1300. After 1400 they get replaced with arquebusiers. Also Flemish and Swiss pikes replace merc spears in a lot of places by 1350. Landsknecht come a long in 1478. Knights and German knights repalce Frankish knights after 1300. Welsh longbows start to appear in 1300 and welsh spears disappear after 1400.
