Whenever a son turns 16, we (as Benevolent Fathers of our respective Nations :smash:) provided with a new general. This general will have strengths and weaknesses, good and bad stuff. We realize that some of it is random, and some of it is father-earned. The son of a corrupt ploutocrat obviously has more chances to be a corrupt ploutocrat than an honest and generous lord. That much, every one here knows.

What is little-known (or, at least *I* didn't know, and perhaps I'm just on the slow wagon, or the short bus. I'll know for sure when you guys go "well DUH !", won't I ? ) is that an English son is not exactly the same as a Russian son.

Browsing through the files, I have found out that there are some VnV's that have a slight chance of coming up at birth, and that depend on which faction you're playing. Now, I don't know for sure that these triggers work at all, but if they do, it's a nice bit of thinking on CA's part to have put them in, to give each country a slight nudge towards their historical strengths, if a bit influenced by cultural stereotypes.

Also, bear in mind that these are tested on coming of age, so I don't think generals gotten through marriage and adoptions will have them. Since most of these are positive, it's an incentive to keep the bloodline "pure". Also, not all factions have them for some reason. Rushed job ? It will be easy to add some in for all the factions that were left out if we can agree on what each country should get.

Here is the list :

All Islam factions
Public Faith (100%)
Mathematic Skill (4%)

England
Hates France (4%)
Hates Scotland (4%)
Brave (4%)
Ugly (4%)

Scotland
Hates England (4%)
Feck (4%)
Miserly (4%)
Hale and Hearty (4%)
Rabble Rouser (4%)

France
Hates England (4%)
Drink (4%)
Brave (4%)

H.R.E.
Public Faith (25%)
Harsh Justice (4%)
Stoic (10%)
Generous (5%)
Harsh Justice (4%)
This one is a bit weird. Don't know why the same trait comes up twice.

Denmark
Drink (4%)
Hale and Hearty (4%)
Mathematic Skill (4%)

Hungary
Anger (5%)
Berserker (5%)
Religious Activity (5%)
Hale and Hearty (4%)

Byzantium
Corrupt (10%)
Aesthetic (6%)
Hale and Hearty (4%)

Mongols
Eastern Warlord (100%)
Scout (4%)
Good Cavalry General (10%)

Timurids
Eastern Warlord (100%)

Aztecs
Jaguar Warlord (100%)

Also, for those last three factions, there are what seem to be recursive triggers that give a chance for the Warlord traits to start at higher levels than 1.

The factions missing cultural triggers are : Poland, Spain, Portugal, Milan, Venice, Sicily, Papal States, Russia. What would you guys think each should get ?

To get the ball rolling, I reckon Russia and Poland should have Hates Poland and Hates Russia respectively, maybe also Hates HRE for Russia, and the Italians Politician and maybe Mathematician.

Nice find Kobal.

Though I wonder why Hungary gets the berserker VnV?

Actually I never got a berserker general so far.

It comes up twice because there you get two chances of getting that trait.

Erm... Yeah, obviously. What I meant was : wouldn't 8% instead of 2x4% have worked just the same ?

Cheetah : Vlad Tepes effect ? Your guess is as good as mine :laugh4:

It is a bit curious that all those nations are missing their own triggers, it'd be interesting to see what the post-patch trait and VnV files show, there's often quite a few "unmentioned fixes" in patches. Do I read this correctly as your intent is to come up with a simple mod for this? If so awesome, I don't have much input except it'll be interesting to handle the Mongols and Timurids. I'd say Russia would definitely have a Hates(bothofem) chance of 100%, but how can you give this trait if they haven't spawned yet? Would just seem a bit odd doing so.

Cheers my friend!

Yeah, seeing how many small oddities there are in the VnV and ancillaries files, I'll probably end up publishing a simple mod for them both, depending on the patch of course.

The problem I have is that I know very, very little about the history and culture of medieval Poland, Russia, Portugal or the Islamic factions for that matter, so my "giving them birth traits based on stereotypes"-skill is very, very subpar :laugh4:.

I'm probably being over-cautious here, but I start to get worried whenever people discuss cultural stereotypes. The original post is interesting, but discussion of modding in more vices and virtues belongs in the mod forums.

Keeping this thread open risks lots of off-topic discussion of national stereotypes, so as a precautionary measure: :closed:
