View Full Version : Posting limitations?

I was just wondering whether someone imposed some posting limitations on my account.

I remember when I signed up here, I was able to post 3 consecutive posts in the citadel bug thread before I got a message I had to wait some 3 mins before posting again.

Now I noticed that for any post I want to make, i need to wait between 4-5 (for replies) and up to 9 mins if i want to post a new topic after having posted a reply to another.

Its kind of interfering with my posting and my ability to spend time on work :juggle2: as i cannot get off the forum till I have posted what I wanted to say, for I might forget about it if I don't heh.

So....am I considered a spammer or why do I have those restrictions on me now? I noticed I only seem to be having this over at the citadel, but as I replied to a post there like 2 mins ago, I am able to post this new topic here in the entrance hall without any delay!

P.S.: I PMed a mod but got no reply even though the message was read and I don't seem to be able to post at the watchtower for some reason?

Watchtower is for members. Once you lose the status of junior member (i.e. become a member) then you will no longer have these limitations and will be able to post in the watchtower.

The influx of members brought on by M2TW meant that limitations to posting was increased, but areas where junior members can post was also increased.

The minimum amount of time between two posts is called flood control. Junior members have higher flood control then members.

Once you're a member, you'll be able to post quicker.

On a side note and good to know: getting warnings also increases your flood control slightly.

Ah I see!
I thought I was posting too much and someone put a flood control on me :laugh4:

Thanks for the quick replies.

Thanks my understanding too. Sorry I did not reply to you, FactionHeir - I've been swamped with other things and, as flood control is not something I personally have any power over, I did not have anything very constructive to say on the matter.

To expand slightly on what Rythmic said, we used to restrict junior members to post just the Entrance Hall, but over time this was gradually liberalised. Then, just before M2TW came out, we had a really big liberalisation, allowing juniors to post in any game-related forums. However, we also started to get hit by very frequent "spambot" type posts, often for porn, and one or two geniune junior members started going off the rails.

Increasing flood control was a counter-vailing measure to the liberalisation. It gives us more time to "insta-gib" the spambots before they can flood the forums. It also means that newcomers have to think more before posting, discouraging the risk of spam and of repetitive one line "How do I crusade?" type threads that tend to annoy older members. When I go to some other forums, I get discouraged by the number of vacuous one line posts I have to wade through before I get to the good stuff. Here at the Org I really value the longer, more substantive contributions which presumably take several minutes to think out and send. (This post took me several minutes to draft.)

But I can see that the level of flood control we have can be an annoyance for junior members. However, it is only short term - if juniors are active here, promotion usually does not take too long.

Ah ok, good to know.

I guess I need to be even more active then. 18 posts a day doesn't seem to be enough ;)
