as one of the pop-up messages the pope forgives and reconciles them. Kind of weird seeing as how they were destroyed. This happen to anyone else?:skull:

Did their king die in the last battle?
The message might have been triggered by his death, as happens when kings are getting replaced by their heirs and the relations between the pope and the faction start afresh.
At this time it may be unrelated, but it may still have been the trigger to that message you got...

I was once beseiging the last settlement of some faction (I think it was Sicilians) and their king lead an army that attacked my beseigers. In the resulting battle, I took that King prisoner then routed both his army and the garrison and so captured the settlement.

In the aftermath, I got the 10k ransom for the king and then the faction was destroyed.

@ Alden, that's pretty cool.

Meanwhile, I had cases where I captured their king and heir (last surviving family members), they refused ransom and were thus destroyed (they still ahve 2 or 3 territories left). They should really force factions to go into debt to ransom their last family members like original MTW.

Yeah i have had that before with the Scots, they were eventually defeated in my English campaign after being Excommunicated for repeatedly blocking my ports, presumably after being warned.Ten turns or so later they were reconciled.

I agree,or pay you tribte for so many turns if they cant afford it outright.

I agree. I wish they'd let me go into debt to pay ransoms. I'm not very good at keeping a cash reserve and so when I do lose a battle, I almost never can pay ransom. Its a point of pride, though - I really would like to and wouldn't hesitate to go into the red to do it.

One thing that's been bothering me a little is I have yet to bribe a surviving family member from a destroyed faction. I used to do that a lot in Rome - hire these out-of-work generals from factions I'd destroyed. But in M2, they seem to retain their hatred or something.

I'm always looking for capable generals who arn't Selvos in my Venice games. And then I try to maneuver them into being the heir. That is a family very prone to insanity, it seems. I actually managed to do it once and had a German Doge that I'd aquired with a princess by marriage, though it required a big-ol Selvo Family Cruise to the west coast of Africa to accomplish.

I generally don't lose battles nor are in financial difficulties but would still like the AI to pay me. If they can't do so right now, I'm willing to let them take out a mortgage on their king (30 year w/ no money down. Act now!) :laugh4:

The thing is, now they just plain die. Why let em die when they can be a perfectly good cash source? Besides, I can probably recapture their king for profit the next turn and so on. CA probably wants to ruin all the ransom rush fun.

I was attacking the last settlement they had, which was the capital when their king was killed. And he was the last one, as i had just killed his heir and another fanily member in the battle before. I just thought it was funny that in death the pope forgives them. :beam:

I'm rarely in actual financial trouble but I'm really fastidious, probably excessively so, about having all my settlements building all the time. So even if I start my turn with 20k or more, I usually have less than 1000 when I hit End Turn. Way late in the game, as cities start to get built out, I'll start accumulating simply because there's nothing to spend it on but I almost always get bored with the game before then.

And while its pretty rare to get a big army creamed, I do lose little battles from time to time - a general out building Watchtowers with a small escort or something like that. This is the sort of thing I'd like to pay ransom on. But if I packed in every build I possibly could, I can't.

I pack build queues too but rarely run out unless it's several fortresses and stone walls going up simultaneously (can usually be avoided). As for the watchtower building generals, they are generally the worthless ones, right? Let them die and you'll get a replacement.
