I never really payed attention to this before.......
Today I was fighting a battle and noticed the normal big banner but then 8 small flags next to the big banner in EACH unit. These small flage are very anoying and get in the way.
1) Does anybody know that they mean?
2) Anyway to remove them??
They are used to make a difference between unit types. U can remove them by opening the "medieval2.preference.cfg" file and put "show_banners" to 0 instead of 1.
But that code would totally remove the banners, right? I think GotGame just wants the small ones removed, which doesn't look like it's possible.

They're the rank (used to be valor) of the unit. More flags mean a tougher opponent.

The rank makes sense now.....I had a 7 or 8 star General with that army.
They don't change with the general; it's strictly based on the unit. They get extra flags with experience and armor/weapon upgrades. A 3-gold unit with the weapon upgrade and 3 armor upgrades will have little flags over the entire front rank. Basically they get one flag for each in most cases.
The big flag is also different depending upon the unit. Missile infantry units have a triangular banner, cavalry units have a long banner like a modern flag, and melee infantry units banners are rectangular but taller than they are wide, more like the back banners samurai would carry.
Edit- Noticed tonight that castle melee infantry has a different banner than city melee infantry. The samurai banner is for castle infantry. City melee infantry looks like a normal flag with 3 points on the end of it.

The banners equate to experience.....I did some checking on my units...one experience chevron equals one banner...so if a unit has one silver chevron..on the battlefield the unit will have four flags\banners...I like them, they show me instantly in battle who my uber troops are. Mounted units get the long trailing ones, some foot troops and seige crews get small sqaure ones.
There are different colours and designs for the banners within a unit but I'm not sure if the colours have any special meaning.
There is also a banner to show the faction leader and heir.

Tnx Guillan and Cooking......
That makes more sense now. I did check to see what ranking my units were. I had 2 units with 1 gold chevron hence all the smaller flags next to the banners.
I like the flags to see what units are trained more but if you get a few units with alot of training the flags can get in the way.....mainly is you have 8-10 flags plus the banner.
