Why was it closed after three pages of dialogue? It just seems kind of odd that the debate would go for three pages over a 16 hour period and, with things relatively tame for a thread calling a religious figure a Pedophile, suddenly someone comes in a closes it.

Mostly, I am just curious as to what caused the closing so that if I ever think about creating a thread that has anything discussing religious history in it I know what to avoid, or how to try and steer the conversation so as to keep things between the lines and generate positive discussions.

It's true that religion and politics are the two hottest buttons to push, but that doesn't mean they should be taboo for discussion. People just need to learn how to behave like adults in rational conversation (though a discussion about events of past deitous claims could certainly in itself be considered an irrational discussion). That and I read through three pages, and was ready to throw in my two cents before I realized it was locked and now I have to hold my piece :gah2:

I think it closed because it degenerated into two members arguing over one particular point with no real objective apart from to argue. It was a very stupid thread I'm afraid. It deals with highly sensitive issues such as child abuse and religion. In view of this it should have been posted in the backroom. Posting it in the monastery was not a very smart thing to do. Even in the backroom it would probably still have been closed, if not closed sooner, once the fruitless argument had begun.

It may have been closed because it got moved to the Watchtower Backroom, and not the Tavern Backroom. It's possible that Tosa Inu did not really want to deal with topic (can't say I blame him). The thread itself also does not match the Watchtower Backroom purpose, which is to deal with forum rules and conduct pertaining to the Backroom. Maybe you should ask Tosa Inu to reopen it and move it to the Tavern Backroom (and cc: Ser Clegane and Mithrandir, since they will be forced to deal with it when it gets there). If placed in the Tavern Backroom, I have a feeling it will be closed shortly thereafter anyway, unless some strict rules are placed upon the thread to keep it from degenerating into a flame fest.

makes sense, but no, i'm not THAT interested in revisiting the discussion. besides, i've found that, like always, when you put a little time between heated matters things always cool off. there were some historical inaccuracies i was going to clear up, and why there were differences in certain arguments that kept it from being an apples to apples to discussion, mainly because about two weeks ago some friends of mine and i all got together and discussed with a couple of Muslim friends of ours about everything going on in their home culture of the Middle East (the whole criminalization of Rape cases and the easing of the Burden of Proof put on women and the uproar caused over it).

so, since we had already discussed many of these things i was excited to share my two cents, but that has since waned as i debated sports topics with other people... sports always trumps religious and political discussions for me. :laugh4:

I think it was assumed nothing of value would come out of the thread (quite rightly I think), other than a flame war, and that is definitely of no value.
