I did a search, but couldn't come up with this specific question about castle conversion.

I know that you lose some of your military buildings (cavalry and missile training buildings)when you convert a castle to a city, but those building also have a recovery cost associated with them if you manually destroy them first.

So my question is if when you convert a castle to a city are those recovery costs automatically added back to the kitty, or does one only gain the recovery cash if you manually destroy the building you are going to lose before you start the conversion process?

Cheers

I'd say only if you do it manually.

Why they removed the feature which told you what buildings you'd lose is beyond me (i've got a screenshot of it in a magazine saying 'if you proceed with the conversion the following buildings will be lost:')...

Yep, they should definitely kept that. Further, does the barracks get converted to the equivalent city barracks? That would be much better by the ambiguous "stare at thy building browser".

The barracks converts. Churches convert, although if you go from a minor city with an abbey to a castle, you'll drop down to a chapel. Smithies convert. Farms convert. Ranges and stables go away. I've wondered myself if it gives you the destruction money for the lost structures. Next time I convert one, I'll have to save the game before ending the turn and do it both ways to compare results.
