Stranger: since when do you visit the backroom? I never notice you there :inquisitive:

Since the backroom is closed, I guess
I might as well spend some time with
the family

I don't even visit the Tavern that often, and I still think it looks strange.

Does anyone know the full story as to what's going on?

I would have thought that the Kingdom of Peace and Love would be a fine home for a thread to pay respects to the Godfather of Soul.

I'm surprised one hasn't been started already.

RIP James Brown. :shame:

RIP Gerald Ford. :shame:

(I think you've set a record, Banquo. Made a mod and laid off in the same week, what with the Backroom being temp-closed,)

And fast or I'll post a link to the videoclip "James Brown is dead" (LA Styles).

And that would be bad, very bad.

Anyway happy Christmas and a happy New Year!
And you mods hurry up opening the backroom again, and if you're at it you can always open the TYOLT...

Closed only for Western Christmas, yes? Also, is HOF 2006 voting over or is the forum just temporarily closed?

Closed by Christmas on the Gregorian Calendar, I presume. Though I doubt many Shetlanders (who use the Julian calendar) visit this site, and so it could be the western Christmas...

We celebrate the Epiphany much more, as it is the symbol of God embracing all, instead of just the Jews. On the Gregorian Calendar, that would be 6 January.

That's interesting. Is there a reason why the Shetlanders stick with the Julian calendar?

My New Year trip to Perm in Russia has been cancelled but Russians don't really seem to go for Christmas per se, except as the religious festival on Jan 7/8th (Orthodox Julian date). After all those years of atheist communism on top, New Year is first and biggest.

I'll miss the parties, but not the -20C temperatures. :earmuffs:

I think Shetlanders are just a bit strange...
There is usually a small novelty piece on the news about it. "Oh, look! These odd chaps on remote islands Up North celebrate christmas a fortnight late! Haha, how interesting!"

I did some googling and it appears that it is primarily the island of Foula that refused to go with the Gregorian calendar. Apparently they also disregarded a leap year in 1900 and so are a day short of even the Julian calender.

Stubborn Norsemen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foula) apparently. (Wikipedia, but backed up by other sources if you google).

And it appears the Orkneys also stuck to the Julian calendar until early last century.
