View Full Version : Santa was good to me - should I get M2TW now?
Got a gift card to Gamestop so shold I get M2TW now that the patch is out or wait for more patches? Money is not really the issue. I only have so much time for games and don't want to spend time learning to play now if there are still major problems to be fixed or major revisions in the works. I enjoyed MTW but never got RTW after reading about the brain dead AI. Is the AI a challenge this time around? Thanks in advance for any answers.
The AI provides a much better challenge than the RTW one did (from memory) and overall i'd say that the game is well worth getting, but i'm sure others would disagree (primariarly because those of us who love it are too busy playing to post here)

That's a rough one to answer, as it depends on the person. While i think the AI isn't the greatest in this game i also don't think it's horrible. I myself am enjoying this game immensely. I'm playing as the HRE right now and am besieged on one side by England and Milan and on the other side by Russia and Venice. I'm having a blast fending off all their combined attacks. That's me 2c worth. :laugh4:

Its a great game and well worth the money and hopefully as every patch comes out the game will get better.

Not getting M2TW is an offense which automatically puts you on Santa's "naughty" list, for next year ...
Note that the game is terrifically immersive, the AI is better than Rome's, the closeups are worth the price of the game, themselves. There are several mods available right now, including my favorite, Deus lo Vult, which seriously increase the difficulty of the game.
This game will be one of the favorite games of modders for years to come, and the "price of admission" will be worth having a "new game" (mods!) every six to 12 months for that time.
If you like MTW, I'm fairly sure you'd enjoy this. While a lot of us complain about this or that, it's only because the game could be closer to perfection. It's great as it is. My many hours spent is ample proof.
Is the AI a challenge this time around?
I am having a lot of fun on my second VH/VH English campaign. I am the top dog, but the Mongols are just arriving. Neither Scotland nor France has been conquered. I have found it extremely difficult to hold onto my little crusader kingdom around Antioch. It is a challenge, but in a fun way (ie you can win, but you have to work for it).
The games solid. A few bugs here and there, but it's so immersive you don't notice them very well. If you liked RTW, then I'd pick this up in a heartbeat. If you like the medieval period, then this game is for you also.
The AI is majorly improved. Even on the battle field, you never win fights agaisnt thousands on VH and only lose 10-20 in this one. The battlefield AI is also moddable, so the mod's coming out are going to be something of a wonder.
Thanks again for the replies. Picked it up today. Got the last one in the store. :beam:
Hope you have fun then!
You won't regret it :P

Santa has switched you to the "nice" list! Enjoy!
Rome was immersive to me, but this...?
It's missing something. I feel it every time when something's missing, with every game I've played. Maybe it's because it reminds me too much of Rome, and I perceive it as a Rome upgrade/mod, change of graphics, sounds, and stuff.
It doesn't feel good. Help me :(
LOL.
The Byzantines have Spanish-sounding general speeches - the Italians too: that doesn't immerse me into it. There isn't much (historical) text found when you right-click a unit/building: to me not immersing; more like some quick cheap texts. The only TRUE big gameplay addition, compared to Rome, is religion: the series hasn't done much new.
I want to be in shock when I play the next installment. In shock, NOT because it will suck, but because it will be THE BEST, and superior. Yes, in shock, in the hospital, because the game will be so damn good. *knocks off on wood, the shock thing*
Elmo, you should've waited until it was totally patched.
I'm glad he bought it BEFORE he read your post, Bijo. ^_^
Yes, it has flaws. The list of games that I can name that don't is sadly very short.
It's also the most fun I've had at my computer for ages. Bugs, flaws, and all, it's probably already made its way into my top-10 favorite games list, and I AM picky.
I didn't even notice 80% of the actual bugs until I came onto the forums and heard everyone bitching about them.
Enjoy it, Elmo, and Merry Christmas!
Yeah, the constant bitching definitely makes it seem worse than it is. I've seen threads like "what do I need to get started after I patched the game?". The answer is just to play the darn game and go find fixes for things that bother you.
I honestly believe most people will have so much fun with the game that they'd not bother with it. Peeling yourself away is hard enough. Passive AI is game breaking but now they fixed it. Enjoy the game, Elmo.

hello elmo, i wonder if your the same elmo who used to host fantastic mp games in old mtw. at any rate i havnt been able to log onto MP, cuz of some cd-key/CA/gamespy issue, but i cant really get into it for some reason on the single player lvl. i must say, the lack of glorious achievments really makes me uninterested in the campaign, the lack of this option was more understandable in rtw, where huge, world spanning empires was feasable and a possible reality, i just cant imagine any country in this time period owning all the area that must be taken to win the campaign. so i really miss the GA option from mtw1, i'v been taking all the lands from my enemies since stw, it doesnt interest me anymore
as far as the battles go i think the ai is better, although it just doesnt feel the same looking at your units in the zoomed out mode, which your in 99% of the time in battles, this camera without the rich colors of the units makes it feel very sterile, all the units look the same <oddly enough> just look like small grey sprites zoomed out <on high settings>
same game as mtw1, using the rtw map and some nice landscapes, better graphics than rtw but not when zoomed out in battle map
like i said, i'v done this campaign a thousand times already, nothing new really. i regret spending the 50 dollars
if there was glorious achievments i'd probably have a different point of view, its a good game, but nothing you havnt played before

I say get it (M2TW). I'm not very demanding when it comes to AI and other details. I just like a fun experience. I loved Rome, and I love M2TW.
Rhedd, katank:
It could be that some people won't bother with those game issues. The more you aware, the worse it seems.... true.
I remember playing another game which I enjoyed to a good extent, and when I started checking out forums I began to complain a lot.
But I will tell you something more: I didn't check out any TW board for a long time, and such was the case when getting M2. When playing M2 I was quickly irritated, and when visiting TW boards it became slightly worse.
Point is that people shouldn't visit forums and just get the damn game, and be totally ignorant, and enjoy it. The less you know, the happier you'll possibly be :2cents:
Though some mods are quite interesting to notice on forums.

The game is not perfect...surely not. Bot not one game is perfect. Not even any Sid Meier's game.
OFF
(Colonization is almost perfect, if he would think through his life again and stop making crap like Railroads!, he could make a Colonization II which could be perfect)
ON
M2TW isn't perfect either, and there are surely some annoying things (inquisitors, but with a mod that is not a pain, heretics - okay I really hate them), the Ai isn't perfect as well, but game rocks anyway...a battle with 5-10000 men...it is just cool. With my new processor and motherboard...awsome graphics, and nothing can be compared to a succesfull (a REALLY succesfull) charge with Knights of Santiago. (hereby I open the Knights of Santiago fanclub...anyone wnat to join?...I will be president...wait...vice-president...JUNIOR VICE-PRESIDENT, that sounds cool (H. Simpson...this is too obvious, I better write Homer S.)) If you know how to enjoy a game, you will enjoy this one!
This is reminding me so much of oblivion and hl2 after launch.
Everyone who loves the game is too busy playing to post, so the boards turn into a bastion of negativity and anyone who visits starts finding flaws that they never would have noticed.

Sorry if my post sounded negative...actually I ment it positive. I love the game very much. And I am not playing it right now cause I have to learn, and when i make a fag-break (for US residents fag=cigarettes and not gay in this meaning:-) i write in this forum.
I actually wasn't criticising you, but the spirit i see around these forums in general - people love the game so much they can't help finding problems :P

I too went straight from MTW to M2TW without getting Rome. I just got M2 for Christmas, and all I have to say is WOW.
I've been playing it nonstop for 4 days now and it is a blast. I just finished a short campaign with the English after failing attempts with Spain and Venice. As soon as I'm done posting this, I'm going to start a long camp as the Byzantines (I think)
There are flaws, yes, but I have been having too musch fun to notice many of them, and they will probably all eventually be fixed by mods and patches.
To anyone who is considering buying M2TW: If you have a decent enough computer, get this game NOW.

I say get it!!! :2thumbsup:
I was in the same boat as King Bob VI. MTW VI to MTW 2. Infact the last Nvidia driver 91.47 stopped MTW VI, there are no more work arounds and I didn't want to roll back. I finally got the DVD player for the CPU at Christmas and bought the game yesterday. There are quirks has posted in the forums but I think the game looks great. Almost too distracting to take in all the gameplay. Besides I have not read anyone going back to MTW VI because of the gameplay.
I just got through the tutorial and am very very impressed. Anyone else thinking of moving on MTW 2 don't hesitate. Take it for what it is a game and enjoy! I think I will burn the midnight oil and start my first campaign now.:coffeenews:

I definitely say get it.
While the AI has been criticized, I've found in my H/H long English campaign that they're not all that dumb. The Scots are still giving me trouble, but with two armies besieging Edinburg I think I can finally take them:charge:
Oh...uh...back to the topic: Yes, indeedy get it. Although I'm no pro by any means, I at least think it's pretty challenging. My graphics are on medium and it still looks pretty dang good. There's lots and lots of time to be spent with 17 factions I think, and if you're a history buff you can use this game as your excuse for at least some education.:book:
Im playing M/M and ive gotten my behind handed to me on a pike a few times :)

umm i dont know what u mean that most posts are negative, after any post that doesnt say mtw2 is the greatest game there is like 10 fanboi's complaining that every post is negative, thus fueling negativity...but without the fanboi posts i think most posts are from people who enjoy the game
i dont atm, is it not my right to post my complaints in a civil manner in a thread that is asking the opinions of people who own the game?
they shoulda waited another 6 months imo, and added more touches, i am just hoping GA comes back in a patch ~:handball:

Of course, it's your right. No one saying it isn't. It's just people have different perceptions of the game, and indeed of the posts in this forum.
Since Elmo has bought the game, I'm going to close this thread. Prospective buyers can alway read the first impressions sticky or start a new thread.
