Having recently found that expert level gives the AI no cost for keeping troops, i've become much more aggressive in my campaigns.
Early on in the campaign, having attacked Shimazu as Mori, I managed to get his Daimyo bodyguard isolated against my intact YS, YA and Daimyo units, all attacking downhill. His bodyguard was decimated very quickly, but his Daimyo survived on his own against 100+ troops for some ridiculous amount of time before escaping!
Has anyone seen such evidence of the survival power of the Daimyo, as i'm sure this must be some sort of in-game quirk (sorry, bug!).
I saw the same with 2 monks defending a castle against a 300+ army of YS/YA. They killed 40ish troops between them, while in reality such superior numbers should overwhelm two soldiers easily. Still, makes the game more exciting.
I just had an attack on my castle. I was totally outnumbered and I got beat pretty bad. My general was a spear guy, and he had been in lots of battles, so he was the last in his troop. My general was the second last person too die and he was totally surrounded by yari calvary and samuri archers and I watched him fight for about a whole minute before he died.
The Daimyos' take a hell of a lot of killing, it can be annoying but most people would agree that it's better than them dying too easily and having a whole map of ronin left. One of the patches was supposed to fix suicidal Daimyos i think, but i still get it.
As for those monks they must have been on PCP or something http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/cool.gif

The easiest way to kill a Daimyo, within the confines of the regular STW campaign, is to attack his bodyguard unit at the same time as the rest of his army. Morale factors come into play a lot more that way, and he is more liable to flee than stand and fight. When he flees, of course, your men will cut him down. If he stands and fight, he'll most likely be killed, but will take too many of your men with him.
it is true that it would be boring to have a map of ronin, but it is mighty frustrating to watch him gallop away....when you should have his head

In every campaign I make my daimyo work out! He always in the first wave the trick to making sure his personal honour (see combat logs) cranks up as quick as possible. I don't really care to much about the bodyguards. The idea of this is to make my daimyo stronger as quick as possible so he will can gain personal additional honour( alt-tab to the logfiles directories after each battle.) I try to make sure though that he never gets surrounded as it is mainly rear and flank attacks that kill a daimyo.
Bridges though I don't get him too involved as he can be caught out by the arrows or exhaustion.
This way you produce a rock hard daimyo. The personal honour levels though do seem to be based on powers of 2 though. Just like general rankings. So its always twice as hard to make it to next level.
