I recall reading about a way to fix the Sicilian names and change them to proper Italian ones, but unfortunately I've lost track of it. Can anyone refresh me on that? Thanks in advance ~:)

Thinkin about tinkering with MTW? I may be able to help. It's been awhile, but I believe you need to go to campmap/names/DEFAULT_HEROES.txt and open it up. Then you can scroll down to the parts that are marked Sicilian Forenames or Surnames or whatnot and change them carefully as you see fit. Try to keep the syntax as exact as possible.

If you are planning on adding names that don't exist anywhere in this file then you want to add the names in the text file at: Loc/Eng/names.txt as well. Follow the same syntax as the file follows and you'll be fine.

AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE back up both text files before you start tinkering just in case you muck it up.

You might want to check out the modding forums. I believe in the Alchemist lab there is a Creating a new Facting FAQ written by Starkhorn. It gives you all the basics and makes life easier for modders. I have used it from time to time.

Good luck, I hope it works out.

Thanks for the advice ~:) Found the section and changed what I needed to--now hopefully I should see Rogers and Tancreds instead of Adams and Aeds.

Again, thanks. I'll keep that advice in mind in case I decide to do some serious file modding.

I am only to happy to help when I can. Be careful though, modding is quite addictive. Once you start you have a hard time stopping. ~;)

Have a look at this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=30881).

It's the forenames number bit. Instead of being 12 or whatever, it's 4 so it points to the scottish forenames. There is also another problem with the faction names. When you get a proposal of marriage, novgorod and sicily often appear as "Golden Khanate". I haven't looked into how to fix this as yet.

Whew! I am so glad that it wasn't just me imagining that those Sicilian names were suspiciously Scottish....I actually made reference to it in my next to be posted campaign write-up!

lol bamff.

Caravel hmm, funny I never really noticed. In my defense I rarely play as the Novs or Sicialians. How to fix it is a little beyond me, could it be another pointing problem?

It occurs when one of those factions proposes marriage to you, sending one of their princesses. At the bottom of the message you get something like "The King of Golden Khanate" or "The King of Papal States". It appears to be the only case where faction "country" names are used in the game and they are probably out of sync (a pointing error as you suggested). Usually it's a case of e.g. "The Egyptian Sultan" and not "The Sultan of Egypt", the marriage proposals differ in this way.

I won't bump this thread in case it's seen as necro posting and can't find another thread which refers to this specific issue. The fix for marriage proposal wording is as follows:

Edit the file: C:\..\..\Medieval - Total War\Loc\Eng\DEFAULT_REGION_SPECIFIC.TXT

Find the @["of_Clan_Districts"] section and change it as follows:

@["of_Clan_Districts"]
@{" of the rebels"}
@{" of Almohad Caliphate"}
@{" of Byzantium"}
@{" of The Kingdom of Denmark"}
@{" of Egypt"}
@{" of England"}
@{" of France"}
@{" of The Holy Roman Empire"}
@{" of Italy"}
@{" of Poland"}
@{" of Russia"}
@{" of Spain"}
@{" of Turkey"}
@{" of Aragon"}
@{" of Burgundy"}
@{" of Golden Khanate"}
@{" of Hungary"}
@{" of Novgorod"}
@{" of The Papal States"}
@{" of Sicily"}
@{" of Switzerland"}
(edits for grammatical errors are in possible, though there is probably a maximum string length after which point - truncation (the text was supposed to be translated but wasn't))

You will see that in the vanilla file the order is somewhat jumbled after Aragon. So changing the order here (to match the declaration order in the startpos EARLY/HIGH/LATE .txt file (alphabetical major factions followed by minor factions ascending) if you're interested) resolves the problem.

(the duplicate @["of_Clan_Districts"] section in Loc\Eng\names.text is not used)

This looks like a bug (probably some old files which someone forgot to change), as the wording does not match the rest of the game's localisation translation format - i.e. "King <whoever> of The Swiss" (@["of_Clan_Names"] section in names.txt).

An alternative version of the same section (more in keeping with other localisation strings):

@["of_Clan_Districts"]
@{" of the rebels"}
@{" of the Almohads"}
@{" of the Byzantines"}
@{" of the Danes"}
@{" of the Egyptians"}
@{" of the English"}
@{" of the French"}
@{" of the Germans"}
@{" of the Italians"}
@{" of the Polish"}
@{" of the Russians"}
@{" of the Spanish"}
@{" of the Turkish"}
@{" of the Aragonese"}
@{" of the Burgundians"}
@{" of the Golden Horde"}
@{" of the Hungarians"}
@{" of the men of Novgorod"}
@{" of the Papacy"}
@{" of the Sicilians"}
@{" of the Swiss"}

I understand. Its the little things that make me want to really dig into modding. Luckily I am terribly lazy and never take a decent crack at it :yes:
