View Full Version : Modding Names.txt
Does anyone know if there is a way to use a custom Names.txt file like you can do with the unit and building prod files and the heroes file? I would like to make my mod not change any original files but you can't if you have to add new names to the names.txt file :P

I would love to help out, but I am afraid I don't know what your asking for. There is a Names.txt file. Its in Loc/Eng/names.txt . It holds all the Names and Text and stuff like that in the game. If you wanted to add names to a faction like Bob in with the English. You would have to add Bob to the Names.txt file because Bob isn't in there yet and it has to be in order for the game to recognize it.
If your talking about making a mod, but still having MTW available to play unaltered in its original format, there is a way to do it, but it is complicated and way out of my league to explain. You'd be better off going to the MTW mod forums, in either the Repository or the Alchemist Lab in a thread that explains how to do it.
If I still haven't answered your question I am afraid that I am confused and you'll have to explain what you're looking for a bit more clearly.
I can help you, if you you tell me exactly what you mean/intend to do.
I'm asking if you have to use Names.txt or is there a command line you can put in your starpos file that will name it look for a different file instead, like custom_names.txt.
I'm pretty sure that something like this will work in your startpos file:
SetNameData:: "custom_names.txt"
If that doesn't work you may have to specify it's relative path from the "Total War" folder, usually Loc\Eng.
-Edit: In fact that won't work. That's the actual names of generals/agents/faction leaders file, not the name file itself. I'm not sure how to do what you're trying to do. I could do with knowing myself also.
